I really would like to hear your opinions about this idea: peaceful relations between the Federation and the Empire.
For starters exploration would be something both sides would like to agree to and in this even the empire would be more diplomatic to explore on this option then say the dominion. (The Dominion had advanced knowledge of the Alpha Quadrent so could afford to be an asshole to the federation on the first encounter.)
Another key element is how the empire views the federation's stance on the Marquis, this where politics comes in. If the SW/ST universe was connected by a wormhole then the empire would consider the federation to be something akin to the outer rim but unlike the hutts and other criminal warlords, the federation does have a very structured society and there is order and strong unity of government. If the Empire is truly far ahead of the federation then it doesn't have to go over and crush the federation, it would have to spread it's fleet to occupy worlds, and deal with tightly knitted alien powers as well. All ths would take time and effort, during a time when the empire is at civil war. However, assuming the federation takes no role or is unsympathetic of rogue governments (ie: the rebel alliance) then there can be a mutual understanding between the two. The empire may take interest in the design of the defiant. Fast, accurate, firing multiple rounds of weaponry. Modify that to SW standards and it'll be chewing up X wing fighters in no time.
The Empire may give the federation either hyperdrive or 'loan' a few support ships. This of course will spark off tensions between federation and the other major players in the AQ. Let the Empire play their hand and help up the federation a bit and before you know it, a new power struggle will occur in the AQ. The empire doesn't need to get involved, if the federation does ok then that's fine by the empire and will tie the two powers closer together. If the Federation begins to crumble then the empire can send in a few more support ships and restore order to the AQ with the federation as a tool for authority.
This of course is assuming the wormhole connects within federation space, if it connects with other empires then they would be bulldozed over and the federation with it. However there is a good chance the federation would receive a better deal from the empire if they were the first to encounter it.
If the dominion or the borg found the empire then this could cause problems.
