It's a strange coincidence that Husker Jay, who had a similar thread here a month or two ago, disappeared around the same time that Phoenix started posting. If you read some of the posts, like flaming while accusing "rabid Warsies" of doing the same, threats to send Trollkingdom.com to hack the board, and calling the Ewoks teddy bears, you would see that they look very similar to Jay's. Either it's a new account, or Phoenix worships Jay to the point of taking his arguements verbatim.

Just about the only thing that that phoenix guy hasn't done that Jay does is bleat about how Trek ships are supposedly immune to lasers

Actually a couple people think he may also be The Evil Shadow; if so he's already done that as well.

To be fair, they probably could clone armies of elite troops using the transporter, but they have never been shown to do so, even during the Dominion War. Of course, they could probably also become immortal and eternally young using transporters, but have never done so, so maybe there's something we don't know. Or maybe the writers suck.

"Sound based" shields

There must be something about Star Trek which attracts these kinds of imbeciles. It's long been noted that there's a correlation between social outcasts and Star Trek; it may be that people who suck at science but still want to feel like they're part of the high-IQ crowd latch onto Star Trek fanboyism for that reason.

It's like Magic: The Gathering. I especially like his inability to comprehend that the ability to build a starship doesn't equal technical prowess.

Incidentally, I wonder how gravity based shields would work.

To be fair, with all that talk of 'frequencies' and 'resonances' and 'shield harmonics' I can't really blame non-scientists for guessing that sound must be involved somehow.



In my experience by far the worst are the Trek RPers, particularly the /online/ Trek RPers. Not that I have ever done this myself, but I have read a few of the relevant forums, usually when someone has emailed me a particularly amusing link. It doesn't even require the creativity that fanfics do, allowing rabid Trekkies to gather their Mary Sue characters together on massive wankships with no distractions to get in the way.

One of these people cornered me at a party I attended a couple of weeks back (Shef-Uni-Sci-Fi-Soc-alumni; most of whom are cool people). He described the campaign he was playing in based on the Wells-class timeships from 'Relativity' - those are the super-insane 29th century ships which are essentially unbeatable by the other canon ships. But oh no, apparently this was not enough for this guy, who spent half an hour telling me about the ludicrous gadgets this thing had piled onto it, with their bullshit technobabble explanations. The best one was the 'transphasic cloaking device that rendered the ship entirely invisible and invulnerable to damage for 15 hours, while still allowing full use of sensors and transporters, and also making it immune to timeline shifts like the temporal incursion ship'. When I suggested that this might be wank, he said 'oh no, it only lasts 15 hours, then it takes half an hour to recharge, though the ship can transwarp to an uninhabited sector of a low-threat time zone to do that'. So apparently with that key limitation it isn't wank at all!

At this point I tried to leave and sensing perhaps that I might be thinking the worse of him, he tried to convince me that he was in fact a modest and sane Trek RPer. Why? Because he was thinking of joining a TNG-era campaign that one of his friends wanted to run, which had the characters on a mere Ambassador class ship. He told me that everyone else they'd asked to join the game refused unless the ship was upgraded to at least a Sovereign (apparently the minimum standard of respectability, if they can't have one of their fanwank designs). Despite the campaign not being focused on starship combat. Fortunately he left right after that.

I like the distinction between the energy-based shield and the rest. You should ask him to clarify that one, and why the others don't involve energy.

Probably talking about the Jem Hadar. Not that their demonstrated tactics say anything about their training. Hell, the short time required to make J-H just might explain WHY they suck so much.

Point out that "battle ready" in Star Trek is considerably lower standards than in real life or SW.

Furthermore, while Trekkies love to wank over the rapid growth of J-H, they NEVER can say HOW MANY J-H can be grown at any given time. If they only have 10 cloning chambers (or what ever the hell the Dominion uses), at 10 days to grow a clone, it would still take over 3000 years to match the 1.2 million "units" from AOTC that required only 10 years and thats assuming a unit is an individual soldier.


Thats when you shove screen-shots up his ass.


Gotta love Trekkie inconsistency. Most of the time they're bragging about how ST shields are better because only one type is needed while SW has dedicated particle and ray shields. Now this moron is turning around and saying the exact opposite.


Tell him if he studied harder, he might not be a rabid trektard and realize the Federation is hopelessly overmatched.

I'm just wondering why not only has Phoenix's debating style been eerily similar to Jay's, but also why Jay suddenly disappeared without warning at the same time that Phoenix appeared.

There is an early DS9 episode called A Man Alone that deals with cloning; in it, a man tries to frame Odo for his own murder by killing a clone of himself. The process took two days from a preliminary stage (essentially a sack of goo) to a full-grown human, using technology of unknown origin. It definitely wasn't Federation, as the cloner - Ibudan - was a Bajoran. Additionally, Bashir noted that a clone could be identified due to faults in the cloning process, but the extent of the faults wasn't discussed.

Even still, making an adult clone does not constitute the clone being "battle ready"

Training aside, you also end up with a troupe of people with free will, not mind-conditioned soldiers. Even if you somehow ignore all the moral issues, good luck getting that "army" to happily march into the jaws of death.

Yes: it require training in how use the weapons, tactics and discipline. And perhaps the Alphan Jem'Hadar are the best example of the drawbacks of lacking in training: they were more aggressive and have (presumibly) more powerful plasma weapons, but they were beated even from the ill-equipped civilian partisans of Damar.

And Bounty is perfectly right on the rest.

The cloning issue was brought up a little bit earlier when I wrote a mid-length post explaining the differences between Jemmy cloning and Republic cloning; Jay had said that since Jemmy cloning produced new soldiers in three days while Republic cloning took years, Dominion clonging was obviously superior. I, in turn, brought up the fact that the Republic's massive industrial capacity means they or the Empire can easily decentralize their cloning efforts across hundreds or thousands of worlds, and the Republic and the Empire still manage to produce well-armed, well-trained clone troopers with a full combined arms force behind them.

I'm not sure what Pheonix is trying at by bringing up the other cloning methodology, as speed isn't the only thing that they need to produce effective clones, and Spaarti cloning cylinders are just as fast, abnd Thrawn was able to make a much more competent army with them.

What the Trektards conveniently ignore about the Jem'Hadar is that they're delibarately engineered to be dependent on Ketracel White just to live. And why? To keep them in line. Not only that, but when supplies run low, they not only die, but go berzerk first
