Just... Why? (Orci To Direct Star Trek 3)

Variety wrote: After weeks of rumblings that Roberto Orci was the frontrunner, sources have told Variety that Skydance and Paramount have indeed tapped Orci to direct Paramount and Skydance’s “Star Trek 3.”

Orci is currently writing the story with J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay and had been campaigning to replace J.J. Abrams as director for some time. Abrams is busy with directing the next installment of the “Star Wars” franchise and will only be producing this pic.

Par, Skydance and his reps had no comment.

Plot details are unknown, but cast members including Chris Pine and Zachary Quinto are expected to return. Abrams will produce along with his producing partner Bryan Burke and Skydance’s David Ellison.

The news comes after Orci and longtime writing partner Alex Kurtzman decided to go their separate ways on future filmmaking endeavors (although their TV production company is staying intact). Sources had told Variety that both were looking to direct more pics and that going solo would be in the best interest of both parties.

Orci is repped by CAA.
So yeah. They're letting the guy who's never directed a film before helm their 50th anniversary incredibly expensive sci-fi blockbuster. Studio I was counting on you not taking stupid risks like that. At least he's got new writing partners. Maybe that will help a bit. :-|

Well, that is depressing. Has anyone at Paramount thought about asking what Nicholas Meyer is doing right now?

I hear George Lucas is not doing anything now :P

What I'm curious about is how you campaign for a director spot if you've never directed anything so much as an independent project.

They trusted Abrams with the property and look at what happened. A decent reboot and a shitty sequel. Don't expect anything more than that and you may be pleasantly surprised.

So, they chose Roberto "I love torture and advocate its use by law enforcement" Orci to helm this? Ugh.

'Transformers: Prime' is an excellent show DESPITE having Orci as executive producer. It seems Orci is creative, and has good ideas, but someone SANE must filter these ideas to ensure the final product (the show) does not get tangled up in confused and contradictory plot threads.

I've read some interviews featuring this guy and he's neatly fitting into the "overgrown fratboy douchebro" niche. He's also a conspiracy theorist and 9/11 truther, which explains why the movies written by him and his former partner Kurtzmann feature clumsy government conspiracies and incomprehensible plot developments.

I think the ST franchise is about to get buried for good.

So what, he's like a crazier, torture happy George Lucas?

And sadly, neither John D. Payne or Patrick McKay have any prior screenwriting experience. Already some bad signs for this movie. Hopefully, those two can finish this project without getting corrupted by Orci's idoicy about storytelling.

how do you become a screen writer on a major movie without having any prior experience ?

Through a healthy dose of Vitamin C(onnections). Orci went to the same private school as a bunch of other Hollywood celebrities, do the math.

He has also created a ton of shows and movies that for whatever reasons sold or are selling well. And was involved in the original reboot.

My prediction:
- somebody will get tortured
- the movie will sell extremely well

Probably Kirk or Scotty will take a blowtorch or something to make bad guy of the week movie talk, if the TV shows are any indication. Spock will not perform a mind meld because like the liberal wuss he is he will object to mind rape.

Do not mention him. The alleged film he appears in is not to be spoken of :D

Yeah, but $10 says he left Vulcan before it was destroyed in this time line. :D

Actually, he did. Twice. In ST-6 he mind-raped Valeris to get the info they needed to stop the assassination, and in the reboot he mind melded a stunned Romulan without his consent. Sounds like mind rape to me. :)

I know, I was parodying Orci's attitude towards due process.

Roddenberry must be cursing in his grave at the thought of someone like Orci being given the helm to the franchise.
