Who is the most 'logical'

Post by saurc »

As the topic post. I couldn't think of anyone from DS9 to fit the category.

He's from VOY.

I picked Data, since though Vulcans made a culture out of logic, they're still biological beings.

So? Data shows obvious illogical thought on occasion, not to mention he was made imperfectly intentionally.

They all do illogical things. Personally, I voted for Spock, it seemed a much bigger thing with him.

True. Spock and Gallileo 7, Data and the Prime Directive, the other two for not killing their respective captians...

However, rhoenix seemed to think that being a machine made it him perfect.

The assertion was not to state that Data was somehow "perfect" - it's simply an extension of what Spock himself said to Data during an episode of TNG (and I'm sorry, but a 5 minute Google search failed me for the specific episode of TNG, so I'm paraphrasing). In this episode, Spock told Data that his naturally logical state of mind was a state that Vulcans aspired their entire lifetimes to, and to be more thankful of his gifts, regardless of his quest to be more human.

He's the only one of the bunch to who it doesn't come naturally, though. Vulcans can act irrationally, they just choose and try not to. Underneath that whole "perfect logic" spiel they're just as irrational and passionate as any other individual and that irrationality shines through when they're stressed or drugged or in any other way incapacitated. Data doesn't have that irrational "fallback"; anything irrational he does is because he makes an honest mistake, or because he's clumsily trying to be "more human" without being able to understand why humans do things he considers to be irrational.

I'm not even sure why Seven is up there. She's socially retarded and blunt, but that's hardly the same as "logical".

Yeah, I thought he was on both for some reason.

His mirror version turned up in one episode as a part of the Rebellion but that's about it.

I gave it to Spock, but the thing about me crossing off Data was because Data often sought to become less logical amd more emotional, which is itself not a logical viewpoint to work from. Why would one seek to cloud their decisionmaking skills? Spock, therefore, is at least advancing himself towards something that could be seen as a utilitarian end-goal, whereas Data was only as logical as he was programmed to be at the time, and sought to de-emphasize the role of logic in his decisionmaking. I'd also say that he didn't show nearly the inference as Spock, which is part of logic. Logic is more than just cold, emotionless decisionmaking afterall.

Data's quest to understand human emotions did not in any way mean that he sought to de-emphasize the role of logic in his decision-making. That is a huge non sequitur.

Same here. As a character -also, the first representation of the Vulcans ever made- whose traits were being established during ST-TOS, Spock had to be the very embodiment of what the authors' idea of a race commited to logical thinking was.

Not to mention the fact that, since he was a human-vulcan hybrid, he was really big on the "logic thing", since he had this ongoing -and rather emotion-driven (pride is an emotion)- quest to prove himself as a "true Vulcan".

Data is quite illogical, for a machine, regardless of how intentionally-imperfect he was made to be.

So, Spock, all the way... yay!

I think Odo belongs up there. Spock will often talk about logic, and Data will often point out irrationality, but Odo's actions and thought processes are definitely more logical in execution, even though he dosent say so constantly.
