That's it. Panic! At the Disco must be stopped

Post by Durandal »

Holy Christ, I can't take this fucking band anymore. I didn't think I could hate a band more than System of a Down, but man, Panic! At the Disco sure proved me wrong. The only decent radio station I've found over here plays their song about "Haven't you people ever heard of closing the god damn door" (yes, that's a full lyric) at least once during my commute back home. Then they follow it with some piece of shit by System of a Down that I'm sure was written to induce seizures in epileptics.

Talk about music meant for kids who missed their fucking Ritalin dose. The lyrics make no sense, the singer sounds more like he's talking to the beat than singing, and the music itself sounds disjointed and doesn't flow at all. It's like they gave a monkey some paint and had him throw it onto some scales. These qualities combine to make one of the worst popular bands I've heard in a long, long time. Say what you will about pop idols like Britney and Christina, at least the notes in their songs seem like they should go together.

This band has to be taken out in the back and put down.

I'm happy that Vegas finnaly has a station thats not rap, top 40, or Rob Thomas and shit to play inbetween Rob Thomas. Sadly our "oldies" stations have started to have alot more 80's crap sneaking in lately.

But what if the cure is worse than the disease? :)

I want to know if shithouse music like that is played because it's popular, because some record company pays heaps, or because their fans are really noisy. What gives?

If Panic! at the Disco, Fallout Boy, Hawthorne Heights, Linkin Park, and System of a Down can make it in the music industry, surely anyone can.

Bands like this and Black Eyed Peas are precisely why I've stopped listening to the radio altogether.

Also, some of the track titles on the newest Panic! album are ridiculously long:

-The Only Difference Between Martyrdom And Suicide Is Press Coverage
-London Beckoned Songs About Money Written By Machines
-Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off
-There's A Good Reason These Tables are Numbered Honey, You Just Haven't Thought Of It Yet (this one takes the fucking cake)

Why blame the bands? I blame the douches that listen to this crap and make it popular. You want to put a punctuation mark in your band's name, sing ridiculously titled songs to no discernable beat or rythm that's your right as an artist. But if you pay to listen to this shit then you're just an idiot. I blame the taste of popular music listeners these days for the tripe that's on the radio. Go XM satellite Radio.

Indeed. People do love to complain about the shitty pop culture but it's really The People who create this. Of course, it's wrong to attack The People in a society that prides itself on democratizing everything (even science).

To some extent, I actually like the band; the music video for the song "I Write Sins, Not Tragedies" was actually okay. What I don't like is how they get overplayed; some of the stations here must play that song at least twice every hour, and people are always requesting it. Plus, for some reason, the censored version just sounds like shit.

It's certainly not high quality music, but it was fun to listen to once in a while.

I like the band, saw them at Reading festival and they are entertaining live.

The songs are great to sing a long too when out in a club. Who cares if the song titles are long?

The singer can sing and the band can play their instruments and the lyrics are reasonably witty.

There are far far worse bands out there.

Oh and the lyrics do make sense, each song tells a story. Their main problem is that they pay too much attention on the verses and neglect the chorus.

I disagree with that. I originally quite liked that song precisely because of the music (and not the singer or the lyrics). It isn't your typical [drum pattern + chord strumming + bass riff + optional piano/harmonica/other solo instrument] musical background, which makes it more interesting to me. I can hear a string instruments played both with bows and pizzicato (string plucking), orchestra bells, and crotales (I think) at the beginning, in addition to the more standard electric guitar, drums and cymbals. Instead of playing block chords (all the notes of the chord at the same time), they break some of their chords up and play them as arpeggios (one note at a time), ascending and descending, and then layer the instruments they're using in a cool way (in my opinion) so that you can hear how the different instrument sections are doing different things.

I think it flows, but not in the normal way pop songs are structured. I honestly never thought they'd get to be popular for that very reason, but I remember thinking that they did sound very fresh and different--now that they've been overplayed all to hell to an incredibly annoying degree, that feeling has faded, but I still think that they (if they write their own music) are more musical than you're giving them credit for. 'Course, if it doesn't work for you, it doesn't work for you, but technically all their chord progressions and things work within the song. If you care. :D

Which was originally called "I liked you better when you were a myspace whore"

Its just a trend at the moment. Besides wheres the rule that says you have to have short song titles?

- I've Got a Dark Alley and a Bad Idea That Says You Should Shut Your Mouth
- Get Busy Living or Get Busy Dying (Do Your Part to Save the Scene and Stop Going to Shows) [Just cut out the part in the parentheses, and it actually makes a good title.]

Personally, I can't believe I remembered those two directly off the top of my head. I'm ashamed of myself, really.

"I Write Sins Not Tragedies" is perhaps the only song by Panic! at the Disco that I can stand for extended periods of time.

It still sounds like shit. Probably because they're trying to shoe-horn a 50-word screed of senseless drivel into a single line of sheet music.

I take it you've never heard Hawthorne Heights. While I can tolerate P!ATD songs for a short time, Hawthorne Heights fills me with an inexplicable, murderous rage within the first ten seconds. It's like they took all the most annoying parts of Blink 182 and then tuned it specifically to my hate receptors.

Like me! Hey, if you don't like it then don't listen to it. C'est plus simple. Change to a station that plays something you do like, or get a CD/i-pod. Those things are awesome, it's the only way I can get classical music around here. Besides, even if we had classical music stations, they wouldn't play the entirety of Mahler's Symphony #2 "Resurrection" without interruption.

The song in question mentioned by Durandal is I write sins not tragedies. Though it's the only song by them I like, every other one sucks. Oh, and the radio version is inferior for some reason.
Durandal wrote:Talk about music meant for kids who missed their fucking Ritalin dose. So, will you crucify me when I say that the quirkiness of "I write sins not tragedies" reminds me of the Beatles?

Oh, and I don't see how "lyrics don't make sense" is a complaint. This is true for almost all non-love songs.

Hey, there's worse things in life than rocking chairs, Maker's Mark, and Sinatra. Actually, this side of a blowjob, I'm hard pressed to think of something better.

Now I wish I had some Maker's Mark. And a rocking chair. And a blowjob.
