Just a little piece of advice

If you want a good balance between file size and quality in your jpgs, use irfanview to encode them. My 300x100 blingbling avatar would be over 25k if encoded by photoshop even at a "bleh" setting

Use photoshop to do your work, then let irfanview handle the encode~ the not-so-big quality increase in PS simply isnt worth the gigantic file sizes

IMHO, I prefer using Adobe's ImageReady to compressing down images. It works quite well for me. The native Photoshop compressor, of course, is designed for quality rather than size.

www.redsun.com has a lot of fonts, but they're often made by amateurs.

Good fonts will cost you money.

How does Rhino 3d compare to the likes of Lightwave, 3DS max, and Maya?

It's workable, if you ever worked with Autocad, you'll be on familiar grounds, the interface is very precision-orientated but intuitive, it's good for modeling objects with precise dimensions.
My main quibble is the rest, material interface, cameras, lights and the renderer, they don't offer the level of versatility the other programs offer.
As always, good results can be done with the program, if you dedicate anough time to it.

Check this page for an example of the kind of acheivable results.

I would also like to suggest Renderman, by Pixar. I think it's considered the best renderer out there, and it's used as a plugin for Maya.

Well, on the topic of renderers, Brazil is one of the best around, the results are, ummm, what's the word I'm looking for... Impressive?

About image compressing:

So IrFanView degrades quality less for a filesize that is equal to an image compressed by photoshop?

What are the programs to capture DVD screenshots (things like paint, photoshop don't work).

Because of video overlay. Use a program like PowerDVD.

It's a bit pricey. Fifty for the standard full edition.

To add to the list of software, there's kpovmodeler (part of kdegraphics package, obviously linux-only, more like an IDE/crude modeler for povray) and pngcrush to compress pngs.

i´ve never used rhino, but it´s supposed to be unbeatable if you want to work with splines. for regular box modeling use max.
