RIP Henryk Gorecki, 1933-2010

Modernist-turned-spiritualist Polish composer Henryk Gorecki passed away recently, leaving a body of work behind him as uplifting as it is solemn. I don't know many composers whose works better embody raw, trembling grief, catharsis, and the hope of renewal like his do, which hopefully will provide comfort to his family right now. His passing reminds me of how few there are left in his grand tradition and how close the curtain is to falling on the entire movement.





May you find the peace you sought to give to those whose lives ended in trauma and anguish.

Schubert immediately comes to mind, as do Brahms and Mahler.

That said, it is said to see him go. I really liked his music.
