Re: Orbital defense platforms
But the NERVA program did have a competing design, the DUMBO rocket, which *did* have T/W greater than one, and could have been used for liftoff. But alas, NASA pretty much knew "nope, we're not gonna get to launch nuclear rockets", and so required the program to conform to the existing NE...

Re: Unit Frontages - for Warhammer 40K fic
I know warhammer defaults to rule of cool and we are talking about a setting where the largest battle mechs have castles on their heads and the spaceships look like flying cathedrals. Still, are there any books out there that cover a combined arms doctrine that makes sense for the setting? I'd like...

Alternative Rocket Designs/Ideas
So, I was thinking about the nuke thermal-derivative LANTR, which is basically a solid-core NTR with a LOX injection system for what is effectively an afterburner effect. And I got to thinking, what if you could do something similar with a fusion reactor? The idea is simple: replace the fission reac...

Re: Sci-fi power plant ideas
I've kind of gone through a similar process myself, and the best advice I have for you is simple: Cheat. Use fission/fusion/antimatter/whatever-semi-plausible-exotic-power-plant-you-think-of, to drive engines of similar parameters. And then just have a "warp engine/warp field generator" th...

Re: Do you have a Sci Fi universe?
If you have cheap, and especially cheap&bulk, surface-to-orbit lift capability, then it will initially be easier to build a shipyard in a gravity well. Further, a shipyard in *any* kind of gravity well will be easier and cheaper to defend. Resources can come straight from the surface, preventing...

Re: Do you have a Sci Fi universe?
Which could very well be because a 20-megatonne ship takes a lot of energy to push out of LEO. "Get out of orbit" isn't synonymous with "liftoff from planetary surface".

Trust me when I say that multi-megatonne ships require stupidly large amounts of energy to push themselves around in meaningful timeframes.lordofchange13 wrote:Does your people not have Zero Gee stations? you don't necessarily have to build your star cruisers on a planets surface.

As a motto? Nope. However, it is worth noting that the strike cruiser that the 4th Company Ultramarines of the epynomous series employ is titled "Vae Victis".Zinegata wrote: And nobody has yet used the motto "Vae Victis!"?

There's al-Qiyamah, which is the Islamic version of the end. You also have Frashokereti, the Zoroastrian version. On top of that, there's the Hindu "Kali Yuga".

Re: WH 40K: 5th Edition (Opinions?)
True LOS - I get that GW want to encourage modelling and it's an awesome part of the hobby but there are absurdities to using True Line Of Sight. This again partly relates to bases. Am I being cheesey using 'small' terminators? Has that guy who has modelled his Wraithlord to be kneeling broken the ...

Re: WH 40K: 5th Edition (Opinions?)
Then again, I think GW had someone paired to him when he did the recent WD Sisters Codex, hopefully to put some reins on him, so all may not be lost. No. Just no. Not because of any Ward fanboyism, but because it was Robin Cruddace who wrote the WD Sisters mini-dex. Just the rules, mind you. I agre...

Did you even read the same novel I did? What Alaric did made perfect sense in context of the novel (to fall to Chaos does it require a conscious choice to do so? or are you damned regardless of what you do once Chaos has you?). More to the point, this sort of thing is perfectly in line with existin...

Re: WH 40K: 5th Edition (Opinions?)
AFAIK, the general 40K'er (not necessary of SDN's resident 40K peeps) opinion is that 5th Edition is the best edition so far, especially as far as the rules go. My own opinion? Never played the TT game (wish I had/could), so can't say much about that. That said, I think 5th is doing pretty well. Esp...

Re: Nostalgia for Infinity in nBSG
If I recall the power suits that were used to deliver Khouri to Resurgam, as well as the heavily armed versions used in the assault on the Cerberus object, were powered by antilithium from the Infinity's own stores. Some other scenes, such as the combat training in one of the large cargo bays, seem...

Re: Nostalgia for Infinity in nBSG
I was assuming prior to arrival at Yellowstone, so Khouri will not be among them. Well, that makes things much easier, at least for me. Khouri is a bit of a wild card, particularly when combined with Volyova. Volyova on her own is more easily predictable, at the very least. If she were the lone rep...

Re: Nostalgia for Infinity in nBSG
At a guess, the Nostalgia for Infinity will cause a lot of trouble for the Cylons, should they attempt to engage it- the same if the Colonials think that the lighthugger is a Cylon trick. I predict much hurt will be heaped upon any fleet which attacks the Nostalgia - but the crew of the lighthugger ...

Re: Idea for FTL
I will point out that a 10 megaton warship is about the mass of a fully loaded high-end capital ship. Most warships are much smaller. 100,000-500,000 for light and heavy cruisers, 30,000-50,000 tons for destroyers. I'm going to gently point out that, if you have, say, a fairly modest/easily realiza...

Re: Hitchhiker's Guide-verse vs. Star Wars
I'd be quite content to discard And Another Thing because it wasn't written by Adams and Colfer isn't on the same level. Also, I think that as bleak as it was, Mostly Harmless felt fitting as an ending. The series was always a comedy with tragic undertones- the tragedy just became a bit more overt ...

Hell, isn't the entire Ultramarine book series the result of the Ultramarines deciding to sanction an otherwise outstanding group of Ultramarines (who proved loyal from start to finish) because of mere perceived heresy due to violations in protocol? Not quite; Uriel Ventris is fairly unconventional...

Re: The Caseless Ammo Weapons Issues and Solutions
I noticed on the G11 ammo there is a plastic cap on the top of the cartridge. Anyone know what purpose that serves? That'd be due to the telescoped nature of the G11's cartridges; the projectile's volume is surrounded by the propellant. This makes it more compact. What about say having the bullet i...

Re: Another Weapon Reserch
Bolters are, in general, not that effective against heavy armor. Just thought I'd chime in on this, as, depending on munition, and close range, bolters can penetrate armor very well; at borderline hand-to-hand ranges, they penetrate Astartes warplate quite easily- and there are specialized rounds d...
