Re: Math question thread

@ Surly:

Not math per se, but interesting nonetheless:

So with negative index of refraction (meta)materials being made - could we see Cerenkov in air? :D
You know, accelerate an electron out of a metamaterial and with c_m > c_air ...?

^ Bayes Theorem.

Partition the sample space on x > c, and x < = c (Due to X being distributed an uniform pdf over compact [0,1] the event probabilities are 1-c and c respectively)

Re: WMD proliferation... Pros/cons?

Have you guys read Nie Rongzhen or K. Sundarji on Nuclear Deterrence , as opposed to Nuclear Warfighting ? It goes a long way to describe, IMO, China and India's nuclear thinking. Plus, it seems as though Pakistan's nukes (maintained and supplied by China) can be explained well through their lenses.

Re: Boating help/advice needed nautically

I think you'll be alright Shroom: Boats have to pass inspection before the port authority will give them berthing - even if you hire licensed crew. The inspectors will probably fail the boat, and it'll have to be shipped on a larger vessel. What margin is your dad expecting? (Depending on how you ca...

You can derive the speed of light from Maxwell's equations without any fixed reference frame. We have experimentally verified all of Maxwell's equations that are required for the derivation. Special relativity uses this fact - it isn't a "proof" of it. General Relativity and Classical Elec...

What kinds of sources is he using to debate? Even though Israel is the target for a crapload of conspiracy theories, I've never seen it mentioned in the context of Balochistan. The closest thing I can think of would be the assertion that Israel sold some weapons to the mujahedeen in the Soviet occu...

Help with debate on S. Asia

I'm debating this fundi nutjob (anti-Semite). I've got most of his points answered but need help with a few points that I do not know much about: 1) Specifically, he is asserting that Israel and India have together funded an insurgency in the Balochistan region of Pakistan. I think this is ridiculou...

Re: Antimatter atom trapped for first time

Likewise, antihydrogen would be antiprotium, which only has an antiproton and a positron. There are no antineutrons present in this antihydrogen, so your assumption is way off base... They don't make one anti-protium, dude. During the collision anti-neutrons are generated, as are a host of other pa...

Re: Antimatter atom trapped for first time

^ Anti-hydrogen isn't for "fusion" or "antimatter/matter based energy plants/bombs/engines" or whatever - that would be laughably inefficient given the ground state energy of stored antimatter. The anti-hydrogen is to see how the magnetic dipole of the anti-neutron scales as the ...

Re: Asking for some advice (orbital mechanics)

^ Yep - that is roughly why retrogade orbits are more stable. Do you have the Gravity Sim source code? (I'm almost certain the simulator is using too low a Runge Kutta - and that's leading to the long term instability) Essentially - I think the arrangement you have should be stable , at least to ~10...

^ How many periods do you want to check stability for? There's obviously no closed form for an arbitrary 3 body problem, but you can check stability of planet 1 given IEO of planet 2, and then planet 2 given IEO of planet 1. You aren't in a situation where deviations from the elliptic are going to c...
