Re: US passes bill to ban TikTok unless Chinese owner sells platform

My wife was watching something last night that said the real reason the US wants to ban TikTok is some rich asshole wants to own it, can't, so he's trying to get the government to ban it to force a sale. No idea if that's true. I mean, Steve Mnuchin and Bobby Kotick are both hovering over this like...

Re: US passes bill to ban TikTok unless Chinese owner sells platform

I feel like it needs to be said, but it is only the US House that has voted to ban TikTok. The Senate has not voted on this, and it is an open question on whether this will survive in its current form in the Senate.

I find a lot of the reporting on this fairly insubstantial as a result.

It always blows my mind how much people - like Elon Musk and Donald Trump and similar - seem to feel that the world _owes_ them success.

Yeah. And again, the older GOP would never have stood for it, because it's RUSSIA THE ENEMY. Then again, there's a lot of things we see the new GOP rubbing shoulders with that the OldLine would never have considered -- Nazis, mainly. The OldLiners tolerated the KKK and other racists as long as they...

Re: Senator Dianne Feinstein dead at age 90

Done right, an internal party policy of "you get x terms in the seat, and in term x-1 start training your replacement" could work well for this. The outgoing politician makes the new person a choice of continuity, while the new person may attract some new voters to reflect changes in the ...

I saw someone saying somewhere that she was on an important committee in charge of judge appointees and that if she resigned early the Republicans on the committee could have blocked replacing her and that would have put the committee in an deadlock stopping Biden from appointing any new federal ju...

I respect her trying to do her job up until the end. Personally, I don't really? I've developed the impression over the past few years that a lot of the elder cohort in Congress is clinging to office with a literal death grip and preventing generational change. Just from professional experience in ...

Well, overnight things have gotten interesting. Evgeny Prigozhin (the guy behind the Wagner private military company of Bakhmut infamy) gave an interview, which has been translated on twitter, where he basically says that the war with Ukraine was started on false pretenses to enrich the oligarch cla...

Putin announces a 36hr Cease-Fire for the Orthodox Christmas Holiday. His Artillery didn't get the message, they've not stopped bombardment at all. The man thinks like an abuser. "Oh, I offered a cease fire from my punitive invasion, in my mercy. But you didn't take it for some reason. So ungr...

The "more repressive parts of the regime" have been quite willing to gun down and disappear protesters before now, and they maintain, through the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps, a means of exerting power and engaging in violence that is outside the purview of the secular state. They h...

A better question is why target any of them at all? I might be a dumb idiot, but honestly, this all reeks of personal grudges - of many types - that a bunch of old people want to settle before they die. <soapbox> Of all the countries in the Middle East, Iran is a far better partner to have than any ...

The company is losing multiple billions of dollars per _quarter_. When you start laying off technical talent, you're starting to shed muscle, not fat. I do not have a positive outlook for this company, especially now that it's public. Eventually, the people who put their money in are going to want i...

I think it matters to look at this holistically, rather than as a "both sides do this thing _therefore_ x." If you hyperfocus on this one particular problem, then you're going to end up finding excuses for the behavior based on law, precedent, past behavior, - depending on which party you ...

I agree with pretty much everything that EA has said, with one bit of added advice. Buy your car from Car Max. I've gotten both of my recent cars from them and have never had a bad experience with the car or the sales process.

Thoughts on immigration. Unfettered immigration is bad for the mentioned reasons. However, immigration in the long run pays huge economic, demographic, and social dividends. We've seen this in the states given the many waves of immigration we've had. When I grew up it was something to be celebrated....
