Re: RAR. Aliens? have been detected. You must advise POTUS.

Mr. President I can speak to the capsule issue as it has been of some interest to me in the past. The short answer is that the Earth is awash in time capsules, created by both public and private organizations. The sticking point is the records of where these capsules are and when they should be open...

Re: RAR. Aliens? have been detected. You must advise POTUS.

You just hijacked a thread with ancient Babylonian spacemen. Please think about this. How come we have never noticed them before? I see you are also an Archeologist. Did this historic discovery surface coincidentally as the RAR started? Actually part of the RAR is giving BAD advice, or advice that ...

Re: RAR. Aliens? have been detected. You must advise POTUS.

Mr. President, ever since the alien craft were detected I have had my research teams picking apart any and all archives they could get their hands on regarding contact with alien lifeforms. They have just handed me a preliminary copy of their findings and it is my judgment that we may have a problem...

Re: RAR. Aliens? have been detected. You must advise POTUS.

I'm guessing the President would probably like you to be more specific about who to contact, when, and most importantly, what we should say to them. As of this moment my researcher feels that it is only a matter of weeks if not days before the wider astronomical community becomes aware of the objec...

Re: RAR. Aliens? have been detected. You must advise POTUS.

Mr. President, Sir I feel I must respond to Dr. Scudder. We must be wary of applying human terminology and thinking to these unknown objects, for all we know the object in Saturn's orbit could be a control ship for the larger objects. While I admit that its distance from the objects makes this unlik...

Re: [oBSG/BT] Mission of Civilization

No mech HAS to work in space. A mech has to work in a vacuum by definition or it is not a mech it's an industrial mech. Is this perhaps a terminology issue? While mech might be short for battlemech in the setting if your not familiar with the terminology you might assume the term mech refers to all...

They are so doomed Actually they are fine. Photon torpedoes are inert until they are placed in the launcher and the anti-mater is transfered into them. Unless they took the torpedoes straight out of the launcher, then they are screwed. As it stands it sounds like they have a number of unarmed photo...

Re: KE weapons in trek low tech super weapon or lark?

They ships probably have armor measured in meters with or without shields. If the armor also acted as a barrier against transporters that removes a weapon and technique that others can use against them. As a result the ships probably have a number of smaller craft attached to them, shuttles and such...

Re: KE weapons in trek low tech super weapon or lark?

Can't say I have heard of many times that artificial wormholes have been used for FTL ship ship travel. Is it the rapid teleportation type like in Battletech/Mechwarrior Kearny-Fushida drive or are we talking about a ripping open a wormhole portal and flying through type? If it is the latter then I...

Heh heh heh... you seem to have got the idea concept I had for my race down pat. Indeed, no fancy artificial gravity or shields the ion engines I planed to use from the start and the amour is measured in meters thick ablative probably but none of that polarized bullshit... shields by any other name...

Re: KE weapons in trek low tech super weapon or lark?

The tactics would depend heavily on what kinds of enemies they are used to fighting. Given the rather low rate of fire on some of your weapons it looks like they are used to fighting enemies that don't maneuver much or do so at low speeds. Your ships seem almost purpose built to be Borg killers and ...

Re: Did Roman culture spread beyond Roman borders?

You wonder if the Romans or Chinese either ever tried to contact each other. The silk trade did exist in Roman times and Constantinople was a major market for silk and other items. After the Empire was split Constantinople remained a major center of trade with both the middle and far east. It's one...

Re: KE weapons in trek low tech super weapon or lark?

BTW a 1,000 kg object moving at 100,000 m/s does 5E12 J. According to the impact examples page this is enough to do serious damage to Star Trek ships.
Play around with the numbers a bit to find the best ratio of velocity to mass of the anti-Trek ship killer.

Re: KE weapons in trek low tech super weapon or lark?

Can you please post the URL of the fic you mentioned in the OP? On the issue of the effectiveness of KE weapons against trek ships, looking at available evidence they should do much more damage but with significant trade-offs. While it is true that Trek ships are very vulnerable to KE damage the eff...

Re: Science Fiction worth Reading

I second the safehold series and his other works including the honervers and the hellgate books (what do you mean by character explosion). Character Explosion is where an author suddenly increases the number of characters we are supposed to know and care about in a very small space. It's seems like...

Re: When did Luke Skywalker learn to speak bleep-bloop?

In the original trilogy the characters that understand droid speak best are those that spend a lot of time maintaining complex machinery and interacting with droids on a regular basis. Han performed a lot of the maintenance on the Falcon himself and according to one source kludged the Falcon's compu...

Re: Lack of Industrialization in Greco-Roman Civilization

Trying to pinpoint what technologies are required for industrialization is very difficult, partly because we might not recognize a key technology or we we might give too much weight to a technology that wasn't actually very impressive. It might be better to examine what pressures drove industrializa...

Re: Science Fiction worth Reading

I just finished rereading the Kris Longknife series by Mike Shepard. Kinda Honor Harrington light in that Shephard is more character focused an doesn't really wank the tech as much as Weber. I'd still recommend anything by David Weber including his new series Safehold which I find oddly compelling e...

Getting back to the weapons issue for a moment. Somebody pointed out that we don't have a good idea of what atomic are other than bombs. Wasn't the climax of the second book built around the detonation of a nuclear device? While the book called it a "Stone-Burner" bomb the after effects se...

Wasn't there a part in the Thrawn saga where Leia is on the Negori home world and she muses about the longterm environmental damage that a crashed spaceship can cause? I know the revelation was that the empire was dicking them around so Vader would have an army of loyal assassins but before she make...

Re: Another point about the Endor Holocaust.

I'll admit its been awhile since I saw the movie, but wouldn't all the debris from the space battle eventually hit Endor due to simple gravity? If that's the case then shouldn't Endor experience months if not years of large pieces of space debris hitting the planet causing the eventual failure of th...
