Re: Strange New Worlds (spoilers)

Surprisingly I like it. I hate Disco and not that found of Picard, though at least Picard is watchable. But SNW seems like actually Trek. The plots are very Trekkie and they do toss in references of other Trek stuff that are nice. I too worry about the Uhura character. Seems forced. Chapple and Spok...

Re: US Republican Fascist Coup Thread, 2021 edition (Ongoing)

Oh, I get that. But that wasn't the question I responded to. What I responded to was to stop Fascism in the GOP. If you wanna do that, you have to make an alternative for the fuckers. I don't think the Dems should become that, but to nurture it? Sure.

Re: US Republican Fascist Coup Thread, 2021 edition (Ongoing)

Oh I understand that problem. But it does not change the fact that voting block is out there. Since current situation between GOP/Dem or Red/Blue or what every you wanna label it is pretty thin 52/48 or 55/45 ish... So I guess it depends on what your goal is. You can slowly build a movement of makin...

Re: US Republican Fascist Coup Thread, 2021 edition (Ongoing)

I can only assume that they're trying to court the alleged "moderate Republicans," who fifteen years ago were an ugly lot of neoliberals, but are now perfect for the Democrats, like Steve Schmidt. They are not going away as a voting block, so ... yes. Some effort to get them on board a mo...

Re: Who should have been the main antagonist of the Sequel Trilogy

I think it would have been nice to have another villain that doesn't go back into the past. Not an Imperial, not a Force user. Have the Republic an actual competent government but not able to heal all the wounds from the past. Give them a villain they are not used to. Perhaps a Marco Inaros characte...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)

Is it ever actually called armor in a movie? Are we sure it is not primarily an environmental encounter suit? Or just a scary uniform with a headdress to frighten the locals? I don't actually believe any of that, but since the writers have no desire to have the obvious behave as such, why not? Sure...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)

Even if the armor is supposed to protect them from energy weapons, it has to be resilient enough to stand up to accidental impacts on the order of a casual swing of a bat. If not, it's worthless to wear egg shell armor to defend against lasers if it cracks when you sit down hard.

Yes, which would be hilarious. McConnell is a piece of shit, but he understands the Senate. It would be funny if they out him and some loon becomes Minority Leader.

That's why it is key to make him testify. Of course his lawyers will want to plead, but he won't want to. He'll talk.

Disagree. Most the problem we have now is all the Tea Baggers have bubbled up through local GOPer leadership and run the party right now.

Re: Trump/Republican Coup Thread

I hope that the Democrats have the spine to use McConnell's own words against him when he next comes up for reelection. The problem is that McConnell's district loves him. He'll get re-elected until he drops dead. He's no spring chicken either, though. He just got reelected last year, but doubt he'...

Re: Trump/Republican Coup Thread

As I understand it, and I could be wrong, the time for 'witnesses' comes next week after a vote to 'allow witnesses'. I'm not sure they would have been allowed to call witnesses. Now, I do agree they could have deposed witnesses and refer to that during their oratory case. I also very much think the...

Sure, no legal document out there shows she signed a contract for a new show. That said, it was pretty obvious they were building her up for the Republic Rangers bit they have in development. It is a shame, I liked the character. I wonder if they will recast? There is a fan movement out there, or at...

Re: Trump/Republican Coup Thread

As someone who deals with issuing and processing legal cases every day, typos are absurdly commonplace. Not just from claimants/defendants either - there is a reason we have an entry on our time-management database for "Deciphering Judge's Handwriting." So judges are like MDs as in their ...

Re: Trump/Republican Coup Thread

Is there a reason we're salivating at the thought of our enemies dying slowly in prison that isn't just the desire for revenge? Do we think it will achieve any meaningful rehabilitative, public safety, or deterrence goal? Consequences. Our system is broken, we can agree with that. But we've also se...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)

I think it would be nice to address that in the show. They kind have a little, in that the armor of Storm Troopers is complete shit. Literally breaks apart with Melee weapons hits. All they have to do is show unarmored Troopers somewhere being more loyal than trained. Perhaps the idea of having high...

She's already stolen two Imperial cruisers and clearly has plans to liberate Mandalore from whatever occupation forces remains there. She shouldn't need to win the darksaber in a duel if she can retake the planet militarily. 5 years post ROTJ, is there an Imp occupation? They just keep referring to...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)

I was a good episode. Called it with the X wing. That said, de-aged Luke totally hit the uncanny valley for me. Was nice to see him do a death and destruction hallway scene though. The psuedo conflict they build for Bo and Din is silly though. Out of both of them, Din is the 'honorable' one. Nothing...

Re: What are Sectors? Why do they exist? Exploring Hyperlanes, Sectors, and Regional Governance

I never liked the idea of 'hyperlane' and prefer to think of them more as the routes between major systems. Big systems trade with other big systems, they need the infrastructure and defenses for large trade. With the big boys running those routes, smaller folks use them as well due to the infrastru...

I guess it would come down to a facility to build a ship or a facility to build thousands of ships on a galactic scale.
