Re: Situation in Paris

Channel72, excellent post. Its a gigantic clusterfuck and mostly so because of the goddamn politics. Everyone wanta one thing and hates each other and because of that they let a monster grow but they hare each other so much that they dont even want the monster dead. And the horrible thing is that as...

Re: China cracks down on Christian churches

China has no use for Christianity. It is a stupid Western religion - and like any religion, it serves no purpose other than providing the toiling masses with a lie of the afterlife. Christianity, along with all other religions, should perish in a secular society and occupy the same place as myths o...

Re: The slow decay of Venezuela

That's selfish. And selfishness is bad because it only concerns your happiness, here at the expense of the misery and suffering of another. If you don't see that as bad, then there's something deeply wrong with you. That may be so. But the current world situation would tend to suggest that most peo...

Re: The slow decay of Venezuela

Unless I'm reading K. A. Pital wrong, I don't understand where the idea is coming from that he's arguing for a Romantic 'back to the past' fantasy. He doesn't seem to be saying that we should go back to lesser levels of production. Better production (better does not necessarily more, I mean producti...

Re: The slow decay of Venezuela

Fundamentally I see any "victory" that is not victorious for my self and leaves me worse off than I was for the sake of someone else as a defeat. That's selfish. And selfishness is bad because it only concerns your happiness, here at the expense of the misery and suffering of another. If ...

Re: Ectogenesis and artificial wombs

Kind of sounds like what Marx was talking about with respect to the products of our labour in a capitalist society. Alienation from what we make, what we produce etc. I'm probably a mad luddite compared to those who are on a sci-fi forum, based on my opinions. If you look at the way we produce and c...

Re: WI 1918 German revolution

To give a communist revolution a credible chance of success you would need to alter the opinion of much if not all of the non-Communist German population. As it was, the numbers were so heavily stacked against them that the Communists would not have a realistic chance of success. The same is true o...

Re: WI 1918 German revolution

Imagine the Russian Civil War if the Central Powers just kept going, moving their troops eastward over and over and taking advantage of the chaos to push through and try to suppress the Reds by force. It wouldn't be a pretty picture for the Bolsheviks, would it? If I recall correctly, that's exactl...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 5 (TV ONLY)

Its funny that Oberyn's accent was fine but en masse its a bit more grating. Oberyn pulled the accent off well. The sand snakes seem like they are doing a bad Oberyn impersonation. possibly cause Oberyn's accent seemed to be close to the actors on natural accent (the actor was spanish IIRC), while ...

Re: New F4 Trailer

I was distinctly underwhelmed by the previous trailer, but this one has actually pulled me. Mainly because I like the actors they've chosen for it. They're good actors. They don't seem to be hamming it up, but they don't seem to be like 'GRR ANGST' either. Just playing it straight.

Re: Good Anti-Vegan arguments?

Yeah. I don't accept that measurement. It seems somewhat self-serving to define intelligence as the standard for measuring worth, since we're the most intelligent species on the planet. I imagine from an outside perspective, none of us are worth jack shit. The universe doesn't give a fuck. From a p...

Re: Good Anti-Vegan arguments?

That's a neutral thing. There's many creatures whose existence depends upon another creature. Coral and algae, legumes and Rhizobia, us and our own gut bacteria, mitochondrion and nearly all eukaryotes. Of course our existence depends on the existence (or death) of others, and that's true for all b...

That's a bad thing.

We've crippled these species. Without us, they wouldn't survive. We've made them entirely dependent on us.

Re: Good Anti-Vegan arguments?

Vegetarians&Vegans just draw the line a bit further away than I do, by including almost all animals in the morality zone (Flies, bugs, spiders or mosquitoes are usually not in that category - those they still kill.) But even without that exemption, they still act hypoctitical, to a degree, by d...

General Zod wrote:"Meat is murder."

Well animals would kill us and eat us if they had half the chance so I'm really engaging in pre-emptive self defense.
Yes, I'm sure cows would certainly hunt, kill and eat you if they had the chance.

Re: Which curse is the most unforgivable

Perhaps they think of the Dementors as an instrument of punishment. Their presence enables the criminal to remember their worst memories, it isn't that they're directly causing them pain, that may seem to them more like righteous punishment, rather than torture for the sake of getting more info or t...

Very nicely said. They're unforgiveable because to use them (effectively), you must be a person who puts themselves out of reach of forgiveness.

Re: Rights of Native Americans/multi-culturalism vs. separat

I know, I alluded to such in my post. That said it was also 150 years ago. Do you think all parties should renegotiate those treaties now? I think I would be ok with that. As if whitey would ever renegotiate in terms favourable for American Indians. Not going to happen. Didn't happen then, won't ha...

Re: Legend of Korra Book 3 Talkback - "Changes" (Spoilers)

Why didn't Zaheer give the airbenders over? Why did he trick them? Was it all just a ruse so he could attract Team Avatar and kill them/capture them, thinking they were his only powerful enemies? Interesting to note that the original plan was to capture and probably kill Korra as a child, when she w...

Re: Legend of Korra Book 3 Talkback - "Changes" (Spoilers)

The explanation I liked was that what they didn't expect was Korra's resistance to going in the Avatar State. That made them hesitate in striking the fatal blow, wanting to make sure she was staying in the State, and that cost them the vital second to finish the job. Their plan was already desperat...
