Re: Godzilla Minus One

This has the best human story of any of the films in the series. Very strong.

When they compared this film's director to Speilberg, they weren't kidding.

And the action was very riveting.

I'm literally seeing it a second time in Imax to experience the mass of Godzilla directly.

Re: Ant-Man and The Wasp: Quantumania (Spoilers)

I really don't understand the hate this movie generated. It's not GREAT, but it's not bad. It's better than Eternals, Wakanda Forever, and Love and Thunder. The "worst" part was MODOK looked silly. But. He's MODOK. He's supposed to be silly. I think the fact that it's 'below average' for ...

Re: The Ultraman Thread

My first ultra series proper was "Ultraman Mebius." I'm old enough to have caught airings of Ultra Seven on TBS in the early mornings every now and again. Z is a GREAT series, and they recently came out with a dub... that I've been meaning to get around to watching. The camerawork in Z is ...

Re: The Owl House Thread

Finally finished it. I consider it pretty well interlinked with Gravity Falls and Amphibia thematically. I wish its ending wasn't truncated, but they worked well with what time they had. Still, of the three, I think it's the least of them. Still a very solid show. Took a while to click. By the time ...

Re: Wakanda Forever! (SPOILERS!)

Saw Wakanda Forever last night on Disney+ I have no idea where the most of the criticisms I've seen online are coming from. I swear, people just watch the trailers sometimes. Either that, or people have terrible hearing comprehension. Trust me, it's bad skills at basic Literary Analysis, which has ...

Re: Shin Ultraman (Spoilers)

I've seen enough UltraMan to know of the idea, but like my relationship with Supernatural, it's mostly wiki, friends talking about it, and cultural absorption. I'm sad that it had such a short theater run. I doubt it was released anywhere near WV. After all, when Princess Mononoke came to the US, t...

Possibly in theaters.
Yeah, I hope this is all cleared up... it would feel weird to see it in theaters with it unresolved.

Shin Ultraman (Spoilers)

Shin Ultraman just finished its US Theatrical engagement (two days, one for a subtitled version, one for a dub version) and ... Basically crams the plots of 5 classic Ultraman stories into about 2 hours of surprisingly coherent and thought-provoking film. Its core question is the existential quandar...

Re: Biden says right to choose 'fundamental' after leaked document suggests US could allow abortion ban.

Incorrect. In 1804 Supreme Court justice Samuel Chase was impeached. No consequences ensued because the Senate acquitted him. Impeachment is a formal accusation. The trial and handing down of consequences occurs in the Senate. So there is precedent for impeaching a Supreme Court justice and given t...

In otherwords, we can't kill you cause it will look bad, so we're going to drive you out with crappy laws.... … For now at least. I’m sure the “we can kill you because it looks good to our supporters” comes later. I'd call it "We'll kill you indirectly for now, until it's legal to do so direct...

As someone who was in my late teens during this time period -- I FEEL SO SEEN! I was on the opposite end of boy band culture, but I still remember all those things rather vividly. So much of that time period was perfectly captured on screen it was almost scary. It also hit my anxiety in the balls a ...

Halo Live Acction Series Pilot

It's currently available from Paramount Plus, but they have it up on Youtube to entice people. They clearly consider this their 'killer app' like the original Halo was for the original X-Box. And, after viewing it, I have... conflicting opinions. It looks good, it's competently made, the characters ...

I forgot what it eventually devolved into, Dragons of Autumn Twilight was still a classic. It's okay, most people burned the 'Saga and later' stuff out of their minds :) Oh, something that would influence D&D - Zombie Plague movies/tv shows. That just reminds me of the alterations I saw once to...

Re: The Influences on D&D... If Made Today

I think you probably don't get Vancian magic in a made-today D&D; maybe magic system looks like some weird mashup of the Dresden Files and Harry Potter, with a lot of willpower checks and focus instruments instead of defined spell levels and single-digit per-day casting limits. That ... actuall...

Re: The Influences on D&D... If Made Today

It's kind of tough to disentangle post-D&D fantasy from the game itself. Indeed that's kind of the problem with thought experiments like this, the very fact the work in question (in this case Dungeons and Dragons) has itself influenced so much that you'd might end in situation where the work en...

The Influences on D&D... If Made Today

A thought has been percolating around my head, about Dungeons & Dragons, and the literary influences that helped design the world of the game. Among several articles, there were a LOT of influences that ranged from major (Tolkein) to "One creature from this one story" (The Displacer Be...

Just got back, and it's rather interesting in terms of adaptation. On one hand, it's a clear "Sinister Six" thing for its focal villains to go through. On another hand, it adapts "Spider-Men" a decent but otherwise forgettable story. And on top of that, it adapts goddamn "On...

Creating Biologically Plausible Monsters

I've been doing some work on biologically plausible takes on various 'monsters' (IE: Ghosts are several varieties of fungal fruiting body, dragons are psuedo-pterrosaurian varanids, werewolves are 150lbs baboons, etc), at least in a "Biology can do this" sort of way, but there is one thing...

Personally, I always blamed that sort of thing on a combination of deep insularity of the culture, an over-reliance on magic to solve all problems, and a general lack of education in anything other than magic.

Basically, they're idiots. Systematically and culturally.

I just gave it a shot for the first time after all the complaints, and I honestly really like it. They use continuity to tell new tales while having fun along the way ...
