Re: Petition to build the Death Star
This petition system has been a joke from the start; a look at their responses to the petitions asking for an end to marijuana prohibition shows that clearly. It was never intended to really give the American people a direct line to the White House's attention.

Re: below absolute zero
Er... I'm just going to say, "negative temperature" is a complicated idea. At room temperature when we talk about 'hot' or 'cold' we're usually thinking of something like energy density- pumping more energy into the particles that make up a system makes them move around more and gets them...

The Girl Genius novels go into more detail about Boris. He is a very intelligent individual. He does not want to rule the Empire, but he believes in it whole heartedly and is very loyal to the Baron. He is extremely observant and runs the day to day elements of the Empire for the Baron. He most cer...

Wondering how many people will keep trying to say that it's necessary to stop voter fraud.
Some people are remarkably resistant to reality.

Re: Singapore loan to IMF unconsitutional
An update....... The Monetary Authority of Singapore has essentially claimed that since the loan is a conditional one that has not been activated by the IMF, that the liability is counted as an asset in our reserves, there was no need to consult any other body before authorising the loan. For anyon...

I'm surprised that the NJ police didn't issue a statement. Maybe they're trying to keep it internal between the two departments?

SWTOR is one of those games that I enjoy, but don't really play much due to other games getting higher priority. I do hope that it doesn't go away entirely, though; there's a hell of a lot of game in there, in terms of story and the like.

Re: Half of teachers forced to feed pupils going hungry at h
First you start with the premise that everything gets better for having lots of competition and a profit motive. Then you make this an article of faith- something you don't need to prove before you start introducing a market to a new sector of your system. Then you start pushing for charter schools...

Re: Half of teachers forced to feed pupils going hungry at h
Those poor teachers...good on them for what they're doing, but it's criminal that they need to do so. I would think that "hey, school kids - the people who will be our workforce twenty years down the road - learn better and will be more profitable in the future if they're not hungry all the tim...

So if I'm reading that correctly, five billion dollars is just being chucked in a bag and they're ignoring their own written laws for the situation?
Isn't that the kind of thing that's supposed to lead to impeachment/criminal charges/humiliating public resignations?

As you've probably all noticed of late, there's a slew of sensational news articles featuring sunburned people (children especially). Growing up, I think I maybe wore sunscreen when I went to the beach and that was about it. I would go to school, play outside all the freakin' time, ride my bike, be...

I've heard the idea of jellyfish as a reasonably eco-friendly food source put forth. Anyone heard about those? For me...I've told my family to never trust any salmon that isn't labeled as Alaskanan and wild-caught, and I try to limit my total fish intake, specifically going for small schooling fish ...

Re: Operation Scottish Freedom
I find it amusing that they forget (or choose to) that James VI ascended to the English throne and formed the union. Ok, fine, that Scottish dynasty gave us a civil war and a king so bad we asked the Dutch to invade us, but that's irrelevant. They came to us, not the other way round. So...this is l...

Tractor-beam repulsors affect the plasma-ball things. Sit outside one end of the Unimatrix and the instant you see a death-ball launch from that end, shove it back inside the Unimatrix ship and watch most of it vaporize in an instant. Wait, really? What kind of ability is that? I've never seen it o...
