Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border

What, ultimately, would be considered us military intervention? Actual ground combat forces in-country? Or would there be a lesser threshold, such as massive arms sales or infrastructure support, large scale NATO exercises in the Baltic or Arctic Seas, protection of Ukrainian military assets in neig...

I played Distant Universe for a while. RTS, up to 1400 star systems, and loads of space battles. The creators even have a modding tutorial in the manual for replacing ship and character graphics. The sheer joy of watching a fleet of Klingon Battlecruisers from the FASA game ripping apart alien race...

Re: Julian Assange can be extradited to US to face espionage charges, court rules

I actually want to see Assange on trial. A nice open courtroom trial, on TV, and all the shit he revealed put out there. I want to actually see a US Judge have to decide on his fate, while the US public is screaming about what was revealed. It could be the only way the United States industrial/mili...

Re: Different commanders at Antietam

I know this hasn't been added to in a while, but I'll add a few notes regarding Antietam. First, and this is quite important - there were very, very few officers in either army who could have rallied the Federal forces as effectively as McClellan did following the disaster at 2nd Manassas. The force...

Monster Wargames

Have any of you delved into the world of monster wargames? I've played a few, and they are definitely an experience of their own. For instance I own a copy of Great War In Europe (Deluxe Edition) by GMT games, and it covers the entire European War, with the Middle Eastern theater, played out at divi...

Re: Board Game Thread the Second

I played Rebellion with a team of 4, and it actually worked out pretty well. Basically what we did was we had one person running what missions the characters were doing, and the other was running the military and production. It didn't feel like any one of us got overwhelmed with the activity, with t...

I used to post more regularly, and have since become more of a lurker. SirNitram was always one of the more interesting posters, even if I didn't always agree with him, and his presence (as well as many, many others) helped to draw me to this community. That, and his screen name made me feel stupid ...

Re: What if....Stauffenberg succeeded?

I would say that the last real shot to get rid of the Nazis was probably in 1934-35. After that time period, the political counterweights to Hitler had been eliminated, meaning new leadership would have to emerge from circles with little to no experience in government service. The army perhaps could...

Re: The Big Thread of Board Games

So what's the biggest board game you guys have ever seen? I think I have to nominate This Hallowed Ground. It's a regimental level treatment of the entire Battle of Gettysburg. This monster has five maps, with hexes representing about 110 yards of terrain, and each strength point being about 50 indi...

Re: Even As Violent Crime Falls, Killing of Officers Rises

Throw in budget cuts to police departments and dangerously thin coverage in some areas (Chicago jumps to mind), you have police officers who are working tons of hours often with little rest. Not exactly a shock that communications skills are amongst the first things to suffer for fatigued officers. ...

Re: "The Walking Dead" Season 2 Part II Discussion (Spoilers

Thought occured to me as I was pondering the show, and how Jenner mentioned the French held out the longest. I wonder if Medieval style castles would be a good way to keep out zombie hordes. I can't imagine it would have been that hard for a group of survivors to hole up in one of those castles and ...

Prologue Somewhere deep in the Telkinian jungles - one year ago Wade Reckman's eyes slowly flickered open as the smell of acrid smoke drifted into his nostrils. His head was throbbing, and a cool breeze dried the sweat which had formed on his brow. Cool breeze? Oh fuck. Reckman brushed glass off of...

Re: Your favorite fictional private detective(s) (series)

My wife and I really liked Monk when it was on. Tony Shaloub really nailed the character. Just an interesting twist on the police detective character - he's hoplessly akward socially, severely OCD, and profoundly traumatized. Oh, and he's brilliant at solving murders. We also really like Psych . It'...

Take any wacky Bragulan ideas up with Shroom first; they're his toys and he's decided to take a lot of them home with him, so I don't want him holding me responsible for someone else still playing with the rest of them. ah, roger that. I was thinking of a micronation given the geographic difficulties. As far as foreign relations go, The Republic's relationships with neighboring sectors and systems can be described, in a word, as fitful . Republic of Telkin, brief description The Telkinian Republic is almost an accident of sorts. Nestled in an extremely hazardous region of space, the sector has few direct access points, which were only discovered by an errant hyperspace jump. Centered on the planet Telkin, the Republic is a small col...

If you're into war games, I can't recommend VG's The Civil War enough. It's a fantastic strategic level take of the American Civil War, from start to finish. You can find the complete game on VASSAL if you can't find a copy. Simple, elegant rules mechanics, and one of the best rulebooks you'll ever ...
