Re: Kalam cosmological argument

Kalam is an argument regarding causality. Causality requires a before and after to determine an effect. The universe need not have a "before" state, since time is part of the universe. Therefore it is wrong to say that the universe "began" to exist in a causal manner - it is cote...

Re: Reaching out to racists

Regardless of whether racial groups as they are now generally follow trends, on the whole, people will be floating around average across races, hence the term "average". The differences where they exist, will likely have a mixture of factors going into them, not least the population contro...

Re: Dumb fucks who switch from pro to anti abortion in 30min

It's easy to state, much harder to "prove". What attribute of people gives them the right to life, that fetuses presumably do not possess? If you can answer this question convincingly, you've solved a major philosophical conundrum. Rights are social constructs that reflect in the abstract...

Faith is the epistemological position that strong (usually religious) beliefs can be axiomatic at the believer's psychological fiat. It's not always religious, a gambler may have faith his system will absolutely pay out on the next bet, for instance.

How long would the air last, minutes? What would the oceans do? Flash vaporise? Spread out into weird blobs? It's a mad idea I had for a short story, so yeah, perfunctory research is the aim of the game, here. :)

...what would happen? The crust and atmosphere are left behind, but the mantle and core have been teleported god knows where. How long would people survive? What would the effects be?

Re: Most influential philosophers

Epicurus is my favourite ancient philosopher. Preceded Jesus by a couple of centuries and essentially outlined an atheist/deist (technically apatheist in modern nomenclature) worldview that went against the assumptions of theism at the time and since. His ideas on pleasure and hedonistic principles ...

Re: Immortality - Is it worth it?

There are all sorts of things that break people. People don't "deal with it" as well as you think, one of the many reasons mental illness is on the rise. Look at PTSD. The longer you live, the more likely you are to be eventually broken by something in an irreparable way. If you live over ...

Re: Immortality - Is it worth it?

You're an idiot. Maybe people have a different outlook on life on you? People die all the time. You meet new people, make new friends and make new family. I spent most of my life moving from place to place, and have little family that I am any close to and the family I do have I care little about. ...

Being able to deal with it and moving on is not the same as "shrugging it off". It's sucky part of life, but you deal with the suck in order to have the good parts. Everyone you know dying, though? I know my parents are getting "pet fatigue" now, after a life of living with them...

1.) Your family and friends would die off because of old age or illness, as will their children and grandchildren, while you persist, leaving you with severe emotional tramau, become lonely or causing you to disassociate with humanity. The people blithely shrugging this one off are tools. They most...

Re: UK police deal with machete wielding man (video via link

Okay. Still, I wonder how the dynamics of UK law enforcement works, and what police corruption is like there. What would British police abuses of power look like, when their officers aren't even usually granted the power to carry guns? Are they similarly de-powered in other ways, which makes power-...

Anyway, I don't think this is a way to really cut the music industry out of the loop. I have no idea what it costs to rent a studio, but it has to be cheaper than what Ark is charging....

Popular music is mostly gash for mass consumption. Not all of it is artless toss, though, and a great many 'purer' artists just won't appeal to you. On the other hand, if you listen to certain things that resonate with you on an emotional level, you can listen for it in works by other people and see...
