Re: SDN Starship Design Commentaries

Mass Effect has an arms limitation treaty in place. So if the ship becomes a little bit more expensive (in one form of cost or another), but in return you get to drastically increase the amount of time the ship is available, that seems like a major victory. So having room for maintenance inside the ...

Re: World of Warships

Cruiser kills are really easy and can be gotten in the process of self-defense while gunning for DDs in cruisers. It's destroyers that are utterly amazingly soul-crushing.

Re: World of Warships

Once you get into the bogue with the fighter fit it's pretty trivial to get the mission. I'm just annoyed because the DD mission is not something the game is prepared to handle at all. A mission to go hunting a moderately scarce class that is always going to have the choice of whether or not you get...

Re: Scientists say we are in a new epoch.

If you were to dimiss these arguments and/or only put it down to nuclear testing, I'm not sure a since 1610 or 1945 are really long enough to put the "epoch" label on it. In the case of this definition, it's not as if nuclear tests are even happening anymore (for the main part), and they ...

Re: Has anyone tried Skyforge?

It's interesting enough. Tanking is a bit weird because heals in combat don't exist, support classes put up a ton of shields instead. Also the devs seem congenitally incapable of making costumes that don't have a feature or twelve that are just mystifying and make the whole thing goofy. Other than t...

Intel's also announced that they're going to be selling 3D XPoint drives under the Optane brand in 2016. So it's presumably a lot more mature than some of us were thinking.

But so you guys will love this, I stumbled upon the first Browning gas operation patent from 1982 a few months ago. Its a freaking lever action rife with the worst piston ever attached to the muzzle. But it seems this gun really worked; I suppose that's not surprising looking at it. This explains t...

Re: World of Warships

The Yubari has one redeeming feature in that her AA guns are better than most tier 5 ships get. It's a situational perk though and beyond that she can struggle to do the damage you'd want from her. That is less of a problem than practically the entire ship being a citadel. The damage output is low,...

How are tasers in police use shot and in the general case of pulling a gun instead of a taser, do you think it would make a difference to not have them shot by an index finger trigger if they are?

Pay to win crews the game? What game are you talking about? I have only ever spent money on a bomber crew (actually, I think the gold I used was free, so I didn't actually spend anything), and I have no problems winning with a fighter or a tank. WT ain't perfect by any means, but pay to win isn't a...

Yeah, that's a good point.

Understand the ramifications of a point blank ambush on lightly armored guys with a shotgun, and if you decide to do that, have the guy with the most fate take point.

Re: Dark Heresy Second Edition

Scrimming a combat with NPCs and maybe a premade or something should be plenty to get the actual mechanics of the game down well enough that people can have a rough idea of what they're doing building a character, and if you're worried about GMing, a premade or something would probably be enough to ...

Re: Dark Heresy Second Edition

Yeah, the inter-weapon balance was ridiculous, I agree there, but getting on the crit chart early was nice because it gave a visceral feeling to the damage and honestly the FFG 40k crit charts are a standout feature of the system. I think if they made a good change to even out the balance between th...

Re: Boardgame: Creating Meaningful Faction Quirks for Semi-C

Actually, one thing that might be worth considering. If you're talking about getting powers in play, it might be worth considering having one or two more than a player can be reasonably expected to get. That keeps choice in the perk selection and would hopefully increase the longevity of the game as...

Re: Dark Heresy Second Edition

I'm kind of torn about the combat. Part of me really liked the new system for combat from a mechanical standpoint, thought it would be very neat to play with and didn't much care about losing a bunch of legacy stuff that wasn't even close to internally consistent or decently balanced. On the other h...

Re: Boardgame: Creating Meaningful Faction Quirks for Semi-C

I'd say three or so bonuses would probably good. Ten screams minor and meaningless or an overcomplex game. Three should be pretty easy to keep track of especially if each player has a card with three spots on it to keep track of it that everyone can look at quickly. This is pretty much me guessing. ...

As long as the benefit of help from the police isn't worth the downside of potentially getting beaten or ending up breathing bullets, don't call the cops. This isn't particularly difficult. The chance of that downside should be low enough that you can safely disregard it in any case because it's lit...

Re: The Essential Steampunk?

For one end of the genre, I'd have to float Infernal Devices by K.W. It's very atmospheric and portrays a great contrast between the feel of t...
