Re: The High Republic
Well, I've gotten through Light of the Jedi, so I might as well throw my hat in the ring. It's not half bad, for an opening novel. It lays out the broader situation, and gives a strong impression of what we're dealing with. We have the Republic and the Jedi, so powerful and self-confident. We also h...

Re: My own Imperial Rank scheme
Looks fine to me. Kudos for trying. If it's any consolation, Pablo Hidalgo has gone on record saying that the plaques are inconsistent and only work in TESB. Apparently, the inconsistencies in ROTJ were due to a costuming error. This does mean we can discount ROTJ altogether. The best I can suggest ...

Re: Brexit and not very united kingdom politics II
That's where things could get a little tricky. The EU is in the invidious position of having to play fair to both sides as far as regional separatism is concerned. They have to play fair to member states - or at least their governments - who don't want to be broken up, and at the same time...

Don't be silly, he didn't lie. He just never bothered to read the agreement and no one who had told him about that provision. I jest but, he's trying so hard to emulate Trump with every action I wouldn't be surprised if that was the truth. In spite of everything, I still wouldn't be hugely surprise...

The deal has been voted through; 521 to 73. It now must go to the Lords, and must become law before midnight tomorrow night. I feel...not much of anything really. Next election is in 2024 barring a vote to have it early. Given all scotland now goes SNP, there's little chance the Tories won't get bac...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
Cinder is irritatingly ahistorical - the only people who would have followed the order would have been true-blue Clones (maybe a fanatic or two), and any people who followed such orders would have promptly gotten blown up by the rest of the Imperial Navy as Moffs jockeyed not to get their power bas...

Assault Division and Observation Division are niche subdivisions of the larger COMPFORCE, and the only ones specifically described as "elite" in contrast to the whole. A fair point, though I can't find any Canon info on the wider CompForce. The Legends article describes CompForce as being...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
I only have my own feelings to go on, but I see it this way. This series was okay/good on the whole, but it could have been great . This, in my mind, is why so many fans get so annoyed about things like this; and it was also true of the Prequels and Sequels. There were lots of good individual elemen...

Re: Brexit and not very united kingdom politics II
A friend of mine from England says that local people are against Brexit. But at the same time they are sick and tired of Brussels civil servants who constantly say Britain what to do in terms of its politics. They have been told by the papers to be sick and tired of Brussels telling them what to do...

Didn't he slap down R.M Stirling once? Over a Draka aircraft design that would be too heavy to fly?

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
Episode 15. Good on the whole, with a couple of character moments. This was pretty much what I expected, though there were one or two surprises. I don't know who those alien raiders are, but they seemed willing to risk death in large numbers to blow those shipments; not to mention hurling themselves...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
That was rather fun. I have to agree about the Dark troopers. It's great to have them included, but I was kind of hoping they would be powered armour like the Phase III. Ah well. I found this episode interesting, because we actually see stormtrooper combat in a little more detail. No lack of courage...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
A fun episode, but you’ve got to feel for that Imperial captain. Talk about a raw deal. I’ve been giving this (probably far too much) thought. 1. At no point do we have any evidence that Din was every ON Mandalore. He may have grown up solely in Enclaves on various planets. 2. In Clone Wars, we mee...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
While on the short side, time wise, it was a good episode. So, I was kind of thinking that Mando's group was some sort of fundamentalist's group. The whole 'can't take their helmet off' bit and other things like being Mandalorian is a Creed not an ethnicity that don't jive with Mandalorians in Clon...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
Except he explicitly said he'd have to do the trip sublight Unfortunately that’s true. The best I can suggest is that it’s a colloquialism; that terms like ‘lightspeed’ and ‘sublight’ refer specifically to hyperspace and realspace respectively. After all, Han Solo spawned decades of debates over hi...

Re: The Mandalorian Discussion Thread (spoilers and such)
That got my attention. I have a possible explanation for it. When trying to make sense of the Holdo Manoeuvre, I got the idea that hyperdrives use a space-warping effect - similar to Warp or Alcubierre drive - to rapidly accelerate to lightspeed. If this is the case, then it’s plausible that this dr...

I’m going to say right now that despite many years of trying, I have never been quite able to understand finance. I have the sneaking suspicion that the whole thing is nothing more than a government-approved magic trick, and that even talking about money is ultimately pointless, or at least insanity...

No need for punishment. Britain will ruin itself without the EU lifting a finger. Expect a lot of waffle until around about the end of June; the deadline for another extension. If Bojo wants an extension, or if he's tired of being managed by his inner circle (Cummings, Patel, etc), we could see a cr...

The other thing that's got me wondering is just how far along the decision-making process companies like Nissan or Honda.
