Just discovered Blackmore's Night, eh?

TIL my tablet can charge through the USB-C socket in a pinch, albeit painfully slowly.

Re: OJ Simpson dies aged 76

I thought he was a basketball player for some reason. Then again I'm too young to remember his career pre-disgrace and from a country where most people know as much about American football as the average US national knows about cricket.

Re: Brexit and not very united kingdom politics II

Ghetto edit: Found a pretty good summary here. The therapy-based approach encourages patients to consider alternative reasons for their gender-related distress, often eating disorders, neurodivergence, or social acceptance (as if being trans makes you popular at school) – all of which must be carefu...

Re: Brexit and not very united kingdom politics II

Anyone want to summarise the Cass review please? All I'm seeing is stories about fucking JKR being vindicated. I haven't seen the full thing yet, but apparently the highlights include rejecting any study on the effects of puberty-blockers that didn't meet an impossible-to-achieve standard of qualit...

Re: Brexit and not very united kingdom politics II

I'm giving serious thought to volunteering to go to the Labour Party conference as a delegate just so I might get a chance to give Wes Streeting a right slap upside the head. https://twitter.com/leftiestats/status/1777954673867051245 BREAKING: Labour pledges to implement the recommendations of the &...

Re: TIL: Today I Learned... (Join in!)

I am currently wrestling with that right now. Sad thing is, when I first got mine from Cardiff Council it was really easy. Ten minutes, in and out, no need for an appointment, gave it to me right then and there. What they didn't mention, is that despite the card saying "valid until 2032" ...

Re: TIL: Today I Learned... (Join in!)

What was even the point in that...?

Anyway. On a slightly lighter note, TIL disabled bus passes take so long to show up in the mail that you get a two-week grace period to continue using an expired one. Saved me a non-trivial amount of money, that.

Re: UKRAINE WAR - 2024 thread

Ah, so banning political parties isn't an assault on Democracy? Well, it depends on the context, doesn't it. Banning political parties for being too successful and upsetting the status quo? Yeah, that's a problem. Banning political parties for commiting or conspiring to commit acts that meet the te...

And even if you could, I think it'd ea bit of a reach to describe banning political parties that are actively trying to help Russia take over the country some sort of assault on democracy.

Unfortunately, the only way I can think of involves a lot of Israeli noncombatants getting bombed to death as well as Palestinian ones, at least this side of their next election.

Re: UKRAINE WAR - 2024 thread

I'm honestly surprised that Ukraine's conscription age is as high as it is, given that in most countries you can enlist as a volunteer at 18 and that's when there isn't a war on.

Under other circumstances I would consider the real-life GLA and a bunch of Call of Duty villains made flesh turning their guns on each other to be cause to break out the popcorn, but I sincerely doubt that even a fraction of the people who died in that concert hall were guilty of anything worse tha...

My last word on this particular topic will be this: If anyone deserves a bit of slack for taking the position that there's got to be a strictly limited number of ways the invading forces of Nazism could be any worse than what they already have to put up with, it's someone who lived through the Holod...

As I have pointed out on previous occasions when this came up, the Ukrainians are not in a position to turn down volunteers just because they have questionable backgrounds. I would however sincerely hope that their officers and NCOs are under strict instructions that any soldier caught mistreating R...

I don't think there's ever going to be actual peace , as opposed to the sort of peace you get where everyone's busy rearming, until and unless Putin is removed from office in favour of someone who might plausibly come to the negotiating table in good faith. Why would the Ukrainians sue for peace whe...

Well, I'm now on first-name terms with my local MP. What's the rush? And considering the complete lack of any credible military threat to Western Europe since the 90s it's not really been a case of us underspending on defence.
