Re: Is #GamerGate misogyny posing as concern for ethics?

<snip> Citation needed. Come back when you're past puberty, son. I'd be happy to provide any screen shots of what you need. All right. In the interests of not being a shitbird, I will apologize for that crack. I still require proof that Zoe Quinn would fabricate evidence, which is a pretty damn ser...

Re: Is #GamerGate misogyny posing as concern for ethics?

At the bottom of the article, below the part selectively screenshotted above, there's a part wherein further information is revealed of the claimed-transgendered person admitting that he is pretending to be female to gain an advantage online, and clarifies that he is totally a guy. Funny how Spekki...

Re: Why Did Civilization Lag in Africa?

Yeah, this passage in particular made me go "this is a real convenient argument if you're a racist fuck": Reader didn’t really want to draw out the modern implications in the manner of J.P. Rushton, but it’s pretty obvious reading his book that there are connections between prehistoric Afr...

Re: A little bit of Terminator Analysis

The key word being "prepared". Don't forget that the T-1000 was a "highly advanced prototype" that no one really knew anything about. Hell, even the T-1000 didn't appear to know its own limits; it was completely surprised by the fact that it could be frozen by liquid nitrogen, i...

Re: A little bit of Terminator Analysis

Interesting idea. One does have to question why they would even need troops like that when they have demonstrated they are capable of building house-sized bipedal robots that would be far less vulnerable to the common infantry weapons used by the resistance. Maybe it was a resource issue? We do see...

Re: A little bit of Terminator Analysis

While the T-1000 is clearly the more versatile unit in terms of infiltration and keeping a low profile, it is also easier to destroy using conventional weaponry, as long as one is prepared. Given skilled soldiers, a sufficient number of automatic weapons and a boatload of thermite should suffice. Co...

Re: Walking Dead, stupidity is the only option

They're in a tough situation, as with a game focused on dialogue like this one, even 5 choices that actually make a difference per episode then after two episodes there are 1024 possible ways people could have done things. Given that I dabble in IF, I thought I'd weigh in. This is called the Combin...

Re: Has modern medicen halted human evolution?

Yeah, that's valid. That's also selected for, though, and since such an extended family unit often shares genetic material, that also means that there's evolution in action.

TL;DR: Natural selection sometimes gets surprisingly convoluted.

Re: Has modern medicen halted human evolution?

Any flaw that does not kill you or render you sterile prior to reproduction will not be eliminated by natural selection. That's not the whole story, I don't think. There should be numerous secondary benefits of, for instance, parents living long enough to protect their offspring and having an incli...

Re: Bully victim fights back, stabs and kills attacker

Agreed. And I understand why teachers may feel as Simon described. But willful obliviousness in the face of sustained bullying is an issue, and in my case they were not unaware, because my mother had made a sustained effort at alerting the administration and had had several talks with an administrat...

Re: Rampage shooting in Santa Barbara by misogynist 22-yo.

I suspect that PainRack is right in that there needs to be a number of ready-made stereotypes that are, for lack of a better word, acceptable. I don't believe in rigidly gendering them or forcing adherence to them, but a consequence of our in-group behavior is a need to conform and there should be s...

I might argue it's not 'our' culture, but more in terms of the culture of the fora he participated in. 'Our culture' whether it refers to SDN or just everyday umbrella western civiliastion would have been extremely clear with him that concentration camps for women 'so they can have their mates sele...

Re: Rampage shooting in Santa Barbara by misogynist 22-yo.

PainRack and madd0ct0r both raise an interesting point: "isolation" isn't really a cut and dry phenomenon when it comes to the Internet. It's rather reminiscent of deep depression. One can experience profound isolation in the middle of a crowd. Several people bent over backward to help Ell...

Re: Rampage shooting in Santa Barbara by misogynist 22-yo.

How often do we have a significant number of men that actually does this? It's not like the feminism movement has been widely embraced by men for what it is around the world. The fact remains that there are still a large amount of men that can enter a relationship despite holding sexist views, and ...

Would they listen to people that they view as competition? If a sufficient number of men around them act as if certain things are significant, they will learn not to dismiss them out of hand. Consider: these are people who want what they feel are things that other people like them deserve . If othe...

My pleasure. It's a bit of an odd choice though; I'd expect a blade chosen by a knife fighter to have a straight edge. I suppose it could be something like this, which in a sense is serrated.

Re: Does this fight scene make sense?

Is it a leather jacket? In that particular case and perhaps in general, the onematopoeia might be your actual problem: the sound of the word "rip", at least to me, suggests something serrated, something that would tear/saw rather than slice, or make a very large, sloppy cut at the very lea...

More or less, yeah, and that's why it incenses me when people talk about this guy as if he's a one-in-a-million freak accident. Now they're trying to shift the blame onto Aspergers or, in the case of Fox News, those damn gays.

Re: Rampage shooting in Santa Barbara by misogynist 22-yo.

Many cannot deal with metaphor or sarcasm. They become frustrated at not being able to understand why someone is responding to them in certain ways as a result, which leads to them being angry with both themselves and others. It leads to them being incredibly vulnerable to abuse from others. It's a...
