Re: See MILK (movie commentary)

I was really hoping that they'd get the movie released before Nov 4th. It certainly would have helped the cause. That said, I do plan on seeing the movie, but I will always wonder if the studio chickened out and delayed the movie to avoid controversy. I did a little digging on this and there wasn't...

Re: Suggestions for Coliseum debates.

Maybe a friendly mod should split this discussion? It's getting to be a debate about the debate, and I don't want to hijack this thread more than we have. Thanks. Ultimately, the immigration issue boils down to a legal debate, since any meaningful reform is going to have to come from congress. Conse...

See MILK (movie commentary)

I just saw Milk , which tells the story of Harvey Milk , the first openly gay man elected to a major public office in the US. I'm not sure if the timing of the release of this movie deliberately has anything to do with recent events in the gay rights movement in this country, but it's timely regardl...

Re: Suggestions for Coliseum debates.

The criminalization of illegal immigrants represents a net loss for American society as a whole. I'd say that's a fairly loaded statement. Under what standard are you judging a 'loss' to american society? Why bother including that part if you're inviting me to define what a loss would be? What woul...

Re: Suggestions for Coliseum debates.

How about this text for a topic? Worksite Enforcement raids conducted by the US Burueau of Immigration and Customs Enforcement are a constitutional and legal application of law enforcement resources. Kinda narrow. Plus it's pretty much a legal argument, which is a little dull for me. What about som...

Re: Suggestions for Coliseum debates.

I actually think we'd find ourselves in agreement on issues like pushing for more open borders and admitting more people into the country - it's on the enforcement side that I think we have the sharpest disagreement. I think I can come up with a way to frame that in a way other than "rule of l...

Re: Memorial Threads

It seems to me that you're picking a fight over something I never said. Don't be silly. You've been hemming over whether they're appropriate in Testing, and I'm making the argument that your reasoning leads to a good argument to stick them in Testing where they don't clutter up the board. Hardly pi...

Re: Suggestions for Coliseum debates.

I wouldn't mind doing one on US immigration policy, if anybody's interested. I'd be willing to take this debate on, if the powers-that-be are willing. Irishmick and I tangled once on it a while back but it didn't get too far because of the limited context of the OP (if I recall correctly). We'd hav...

Re: Memorial Threads

I'm not saying you shouldn't correct someone if they say something dumb in a memorial thread, but if someone says something you disagree with in a memorial thread, is it so fucking hard to wait a minute to take it to a different thread? We have existing rules against thread highjacking, and isn't t...

Re: Rootkitware... how are regular people supposed to cope?

What programs are you running that require admin access? Here is a list of everything that requires admin access (at least in vista): Not in Vista, in XP, which is what you were talking about at the time. There shouldn't be any differences. The only change to the security I'm aware of is that XP re...

There are solar panels on the other side of the reflector. Take a look at the image here.

The thread's moved on a bit since, but... They might, grudgingly, be acceptable for a business briefing where you expect the audience to not be paying attention anyway Good gods, no. That's exactly what I was talking about when I said "wasting your audience's time." The last thing you want to do in business is to go through all t...

You've got it right, Lonestar. I'm not quite an expert on this, but I've given a few bazillion presentations professionally (although I hate slides in general, and especially Powerpoint). Simply repeating/reading whatever is on the slide is useless, and just wastes people's time. If that's all you'r...

Davey, I can't speak to a lot of your problems (other than "ug, Vista" as I got rid of it). But your AutoCAD loading might be a problem with AutoCAD. Autodesk has been having trouble getting some of their products working properly in 64-bit Vista environments -- I'm 90% certain that AutoCA...

There is a very simple, easy, and entirely democratic solution to the conflict between equal marriage rights for all and freedom of religion for bigots: permanently sever the link between the religious institution of marriage and the secular benefits currently attached to it. Let the religious have...

A link about the disaster - the prospect of sabotage has been seriously mooted at this point - it appears that three separate tanks were vented into one compartment, which shouldn't be possible Not to nitpick, but it is possible, but only if someone seriously screwed up at the central control panel...

Not sure about the status of the change but Halon is supposed to be replaced as it is very hazordous. For example our server rooms uses FM-200TM which is non-toxic (so they say :D ) and won't cause asphyxiation or damage to the equipment. I imagine it will still be a few years before all the USN sh...
