Yeah. Silly stuff, especially now. I haven't seen BOTB in years, but I think that there's a scene with Telly Savalas and crew sitting in the remains of his "Sherman" tank, after its turret has been partially blown away, IIRC. First time I saw that I was thinking, "Now how exactly could someone surv...

While I find baseball and softball somewhat tedious to watch, I am absolutely astounded that they got axed of ahead of something like synchronised swimming. How can that be called a sport?

Patton is a great film, but it's a little jarring now to see all those M-47s or M-48s (whatever they were) instead of Shermans and Tigers or Panthers. Same as Battle of the Bulge . The Germans are riding M48s and M3s, the Americans are riding M24s and calling them Shermans. By far the worst thing, ...

And how is JSF "useless?" No-one said JSF is useless - but as NOS Guy said reports are so far not encouraging (hell, look at the amount of stuff M21A1 Sniper on Stuart's board puts out). JSF's got a lot riding on it - and I remember the last two times the Navy and Air Force were made to collaborate...

Their having the bomb is hardly a good thing, it's just arguably less bad than Iran having it. In any case, even assuming that you are right about them, it doesn't make nuclear proliferation any better an idea. And I never argued otherwise - merely that the idea Iran shouldn't have the bomb because...

Most regional powers do not have leaders who have just openly proclaimed their commitment to spreading the "wave of Islamic revolution" to the rest of the world. That, combined with the specter of nuclear weapons tends to alarm people far more than the nuclear weapons alone would do. In other words...

We wouldn't accept it because we are a huge, wealthy superpower with global interests. Iran is not now, nor is it ever likely to become that at any time in the foreseeable future. Part of judging an enemy by its capabilities and building up yours to match it is a realistic assessment of what you ar...

So much for staying OT. Whoops. In regards to the OP - no, I don't think it will. Bush has still succeeded in his original aim, and was still reinstated to office. Despite all the negative aspects of the Iraq war enough US citizens still believed it was the right thing to do, or at least it didn't ...

you know, the ones that made the Royal Navy their bitch. Remind me again - in June 1813, when a RN and USN frigates of roughly equal size met, who won? Remind me again - when the treaty was signed, who was in control of the sea? Remind me again - who burnt who's capital? No, the primary goal of the...

Have any of you Brits heard of this incident and know anything more on this? I've seen an interview with the British pilot but not the German one. AFL requires the greatest range of skills and is the best spectator sport by far, followed closely by Union and Sevens. ROK Marines: while I'm somewhat dubious about individual claims they've got a helluva reputation, and that site lists them as having a 25:1 kill ratio. Another one for sheer conventional combat power: the Red Army as of June, 1944. While the Allies put a handful of divisions ashore the Soviets outri...

Wrong. America has to much of a financial stake in horrifically cheap Chinese labour. I'm not saying they'd cut off relations completely, but it would put a severe dampner on it. It was suggested that if Australia gave the highest level of political asylum to the diplomat who recently defected the ...

What do I feel about tax cuts? The classic middle-class left-wing conundrum - on the one hand, I feel outraged about the nature of the tax cuts and Howards pandering to suburbia; on the other hand those tax cuts will help send me through University. My moral character is being severly tested.

They'd be mad to try another Tianemenn again. Western Governments cop enough heat for ignoring China's human rights record; if another large-scale massacre were to occur they would almost certainly bow to public pressure and 'chill' things with China, and that's bad for the PRC.
