Re: Why did Italy perform so poorly in WW2?

That said, it's also a bit unfair to simply 'count bayonets' and then say 'enormous Italian Army trounced by plucky Brits', or whatever. At a lot of the set pieces during the Western Desert campaign the British had an enormous advantage - at Bardia the artillery resources available would have made ...

Re: Why did Italy perform so poorly in WW2?

There's a couple of great books in English by a guy called Macgregor Knox which examine the Italian war effort. He makes the point that at no point did the Italians have anything that could be described as a coherent piece of grand strategy, or any sort of institution capable of producing one; it wa...

Re: Euro 2012 Poland & Ukraine

Well, all I can really hope for at this point is that Germany pulls out whatever it is that makes us suck in non-tourney games but makes us pretty good at the cups. Favorites may be the spanish though. And England may surprise people - after their last performance I doubt they'll let a collapse hap...

Re: Aussie economy better than predicted. Conservatives whin

At this point the whole thing is farcical and represents the sort of bubble that parliament is operating in. Bernard Keane at Crikey has written about this - the way the only people who consume political media are politicians, so we get into this ridiculous cycle were media exposure that the average...

Re: Why did Japan perform so poorly in WW2?

Downing did rotate squadrons but the replacements weren't necessarily 'green'; Bungay suggests the only inexperienced squadrons who went into 11 Group were Leigh Mallory's rejects and even then the problem wasn't that they were straight from OTUs, it was that they were prewar flyers who hadn't gaine...

Re: Why did Japan perform so poorly in WW2?

Did Great Britain rotate it's pilots? When possible, unlike the Japanese the British only had to fly alone for two and a half years and they large numbers of both Polish and French airmen to bolster the RAF's numbers, they also got American volunteers in smaller numbers. Don't think they had anythi...

Re: GOP Spokesman: Hurl some acid at those female Dem senato

Are you soft in the head? He's using it in the context of 'let's give this the acid test'. Is it tactless? Absolutely and he should apologise, especially given the climate in the US - but the idea that he was calling for actual violence rather than constructing a metaphor along the lines of 'let's t...

e: in the short term subs are a very good idea. Come on, Australia gets no benefit from landing ships and "light, mobile rapid reaction forces" that the safe European nations like. Who are you going to invade? One of the countries that is both massively bigger than you and/or >1,000km away from any...

Re: Budget Night 2012.

Yes. It's fair to say that - like the rest of the budget - Defence has suffered cuts that were politically driven and were not necessarily advisable. But as Hugh White wrote in Fairfax today that comes against the background of a defence/national security policy that isn't coherent and questions ove...

Re: Budget Night 2012.

Best reaction remains Greg Sheridan flipping his shit over the defence 'cuts'. You'd think after Manne took him to task at the end of last year he'd have learnt his lesson, but apparently not.

Just quietly, the issue here is not the 'crime' but the Geneva Conventions themselves. 'Don't shoot the medic' is a relic of some idealised European battlefield; even if the Taliban were inclined to do it, how would it be in anyway practical? How do you identify the medic in an IED ambush? If you s...

You're misunderstanding him dude. Soldiers are given a choice regarding overseas deployment. Although it's not regulated in the same way, unofficially the same thing happened in Australia in 1999 before the Timor deployment.

Re: Meanwhile, in Germany...

Because US leaders were deeply, deeply reluctant to fight in Vietnam. The story of the US war in Vietnam is of a constant and massive tension between not wanting to get drawn into another Korea - a long, protracted and difficult war in Asia that the US public had no interest or appetite in - and the...

There's something to be said for the idea that the political media in Australia is totally divorced from the reality of the general public and exists only for itself, ...

Zinegata, it's pretty funny how you've made an essentially meaningless contribution and then tried to turn it into a points scoring exercise. Even funnier is how you've conflated two different incidents and then demanded that I prove this fictional incident happen. 'You go to war with the army you h...

What? Even taking you 'model', doesn't the example of Iraq prove the exact opposite? The US didn't and wouldn't deploy enough troops to Iraq, which resulted in a rapid descent into insurgency which in turn eventually forced a massive increase in the number of troops deployed to try and quell it! But then Shep's post clearly demonstrates that the military-industrial complex isn't coming under intense scrutiny, gets piles of expensive contracts, and even gets paid to recommend solutions to problems , solutions which - effective or not - come out of weapon production lines! And best of all, t...
