Re: What was Pablo Hidalgo's Deal with Tech Heads?
There's probably a lot of long history involved, but I'd guess a big part of it amounts to Hidalgo is not an outlier when it comes to get paid to work on Star Wars compared to--say--people like "James SA Corey." And can we honestly say that the past two decades have seen a lot of good feel...

Re: What are Sectors? Why do they exist? Exploring Hyperlanes, Sectors, and Regional Governance
Find this approach very intriguing. If maximum safe speeds in hyperspace correlate to and magnify gross differences in interstellar medium, I can certainly imagine the vast investment in institution and infrastructure needed to support “hyperspace cartography.” Getting real time, galactic wide data ...

Re: FBI demanding Apple build in a backdoor to the IPhone
Not sure if any attorneys are members that might want to weigh in on this, but I'd like to know more about the All Writs Act and, in this particular case, how the 13th Amendment may apply.
There's a reddit discussion on the matter.

Re: Star Wars: Rebels
The rebels ostensibly used a Lambda to ferry "parts and technical crew" to Endor. If they were primarily VIP shuttles, that would be like using a limousine to carry construction workers and their tools to a work site. The UH-60 / S-70 and C-135 / 717 are or were all used in both the VIP a...

Re: The Force, FTL and causality
The counter-intuitive nature of how space and time relate to each other is mind-bogglingly fascinating. I found this useful reading for a layman (it's presented in steps such that concepts are introduced early and then invoked later as it builds upon previous things taught): http://galileoandeinste...

Very interesting, you should write to him. While he's on SDN I've not seen him for a bit and he might miss this but he does update regularly. Does it alter the point of 'FTL, causality and relativity; pick one?' It seems not to from where I am sitting, but that's a cursory glance. As you've (and AR...

Re: The Force, FTL and causality
Nyrath's website has a good explanation of this. Here . I like Atomic Rockets, but his main point at the start of the FTL section is incomplete, and in two cases outright wrong. The technical term for time travel isn't "closed timelike curve." A CTC certainly is a class of time machine, b...

Pretty neat. It's just the way the line was said. "Do you remember your mother? Your real mother?" And Leia just answers him, no confusion about "lolwut I only had one mother" or anything like that. Which yes, carries the implication that Leia had to have known she was adopted, and saw her r...

Re: Ep7 Reviews (Spoilers)
I think the problem is what the fans wanted Star Wars to be isn't what George Lucas wanted Star Wars to be. He got what he wanted in the Prequels, and it was blergh. TFA gave what the fans wanted. I'm not certain Lucas got what he actually wanted in the prequels. He certainly wanted other directors...

Re: Aliens without a nefarious plot...
A pity, no room for negotiation on that? These aliens do know this planet's population growth is approaching a point of unsustainability, their charities not withstanding...we need breathing room. An ability to access Alpha Centauri for colonization would be nice. I'd settle for a few thousand good...

I give it six months at the outside before one of the major powers of Earth does something apocalyptically stupid. Questions and thoughts I have after seeing Force Awakens. 1. What is the current balance of power in the galaxy? 2. Is the First Order some sort of successor state to a fallen empire, a faction within a rump Empire, or movement within a resurgent one? 3. What did Vader start that Kylo feels he needs...

But that also doesn't remove the right to criticize a conceit we find ridiculous enough that it detracts from the quality of the narrative.
