Re: Potential Method of re-freezing arctic being tried

There have been various other grand schemes for reversing the effects of global warming, scientific ideas that were investigated. They either didn't work, unfeasible ( some ideas ) or would be expensive beyond measure. Not just lots of money, but all kinds of resources in existence, land, people, sc...

Re: Baby dearth: why rich societies like Hong Kong are committing demographic suicide

The main problem is that women and men have to work both, and there is such a strain on them on just one child that a second would be an unfathomable burden. Never mind having three, which would be what is required to keep the population growing (if not four). A single child is also incredible expen...

And how can someone tell what will last and what won't? Especially with planned obsolescence in today's consumerist products?

Re: 28% of Americans Cannot Afford $10 Emergency

A note about the Sam Vines theory: a key point is that it really ,really beats in there with big things like housing, utilities, cars, transportation. Situations where the lack of money forces you to end up in a sucky situation. Like inheriting a house that was badly-made, badly-cared for like a loa...

I thought: what about mushrooms? Is there any nutritionally beneficial and agriculturally efficient kind of mushroom worth bringing? Some of these options do bring up environmental concerns addressed a bit earlier. This is why I was talking about redundancy. It's not just that the plants wouldn't gr...

Re: Modern Materials/Methods for Medieval Armor and Weapons

Late armor used things like screws and latches, again they were very sophisticated. They took time to put on because it was so sophisticated. Zippers, velcro, streching straps might help, as well as much stronger fibers and stretching/rubber textiles, but they might look odd and you do not want a sy...

Re: Modern Materials/Methods for Medieval Armor and Weapons

Quite frankly, I'd meet this challenge quite badly no matter what materials you'd pick because I have no substancial martial arts experience. A simple and straight forward question. In order to survive a medieval battle, using only the shapes and forms of that time period as to not to be inconspicuo...

Re: Thought Exercise: Alien Planet Colinization

I think a mayor directive for the list should be that you cannot expect to find anything on the alien world. For example, the local flora might be indigestible to all Earth herbivores, so you should think of including plants that can also double as feed as the animals are literary incapable of grazi...

What about all the creators of Wonder Woman after the initial authors? I get that the original author had more complex ideas than what it seems, but were those ideas still really embraced and kept on throughout all of Wonder Woman's run?

I assume you made a conscious decision between cows and horses. I see the trade off made but since cows can provide oxen for work and travel I still think the better pick is the cow. The extra meat and another dairy source far more prolific than goats or sheep tip the scale for me. I won't presume ...

Re: Thought Exercise: Alien Planet Colinization

A big question is just how technologically advanced is the colony going to be? Because that really affects priorities of what is needed or not. Is the colony limited to pre-industrial food? Because sugar from sugarcane requires lower tech than from sugarbeets (I think, I'm not 100% on this). Same fo...

A minor suggestion: crickets for protein, or other insectrs. They are very space-efficient and feed-efficient (although a mostly-vegan diet would likely be normal and preferable).

Are you limited to the TYPES of plants or actual quantity? Should supporting bacteria and other micro-life also count up? What about plants that help control soil in switching agriculture, as to not deplete the soil? Then again, the alien soil is a big wildcard here and it might be possible that no ...

Actually, one person she could grab is one of the greenies. The purples will go DEATH BEFORE CAPTIVITY! before she could even finish a question. I think that the overall solution to the conflict might be to destroy or disassemble the Gate. It is clearly the goal of the purples and thus its destructi...

Re: Overcoming/breaching hypothetical Trump wall.

Landmines would be more effective deterrent than walls. The problem is that it would require someone admitting that they want border-crossers to be killed on sight, which thankfully still be considered overly bloodthirsty.

Re: A fun SF webcomic- Star Power

The thing about the Star Power is that it, unlike the ST Federation, was created with a purpose in mind that was not aligned to any particular species. The Enterprise represents humanity and the Federation. The Star Power represents itself. Not to mention that the Gate is a product of the Star Power...

Re: Is it hypocritical to oppose murdering homeless people if you would not take them into their homes?

The only people who would seriously think that "not letting strangers live in your home" and "murdering them on sight" are the same probably have been stuck in an echo chamber that they confuse it for the real world.

I get the feeling that this story arch is really targeted at ST's "Prime Directive". On which topic, I think a more proper rule would have been "Don't fuck with unknown, alien species in case you fuck them up more than they already are". Plus, you know, it is a good idea to not l...

Re: So apparently superheroes are racist

If we analyze specific superheroes, we would lose the common features of the genre (white, male, perfectly athletic - certainly a reactionary view at the very least) in favor of specific backstories. There is no fallacy in describing these unifying features, and I did mention that some later-develo...

It is no surprise that human image from antiquity became the key in the fascist depiction of perfect man. No cripple would be a fascist poster boy. Superhuman does not automatically equate to superhero, nor is the idea of superhuman exclusive to fascist imagery. And the superhero that punches villa...

Re: So apparently superheroes are racist

Before we go further, I have what I think a reasonable demand: Let's go analyzing specific superheroes rather than just cross-picking from all of them. It is innately fallacious to take a list of characteristic that define an ideology, pick random individuals from a large group that identify with so...
