This doesn't sound much different to the situation with other large scifi franchises. Other related examples I can think of include the shutting down of stargate fan mods, the use of SW fan designs for warships by LucasArts and contractors, the occasional action taken by Paramount against some start...

The plasma universe folk get involved in regular debates on the Bad Astronomy/Universe Today forums. There is not much point in debating them, since as they see it the facts are quite clear, but still, many people continue to make the attempt.

No love for The Horns of Nimon (4th doctor)? It was atrocious in every possible way; I don't like Tom Baker eps when he seemingly had too much control, but the death of the comedy villain is brilliant.

And as for the "possibility" of FELs being made to use higher energy frequencies, that's purely blue-sky in engineering terms. It can be discussed, but the likelihood of such a design being put into practise is a whole different matter. Here . But FELs wouldn't make a good laser weapon in...

I thought the initial article had some truth in it for certain fields; I recognised the complaints, and I understand how a grad student in astronomy would definitely recognise most of them. I think it was meant somewhat tongue-in-cheek though, going by the comments on the blog page.

We may not have reached the absolute limit in heat dissipation, but we have certainly reached a definite practicallity limit with current transistor size and power requirements: Why else would intel have abandoned all hope of pushing netburst to 10GHZ and instead have moved to shoehorning two cores...

On the thermal limit: our present computing technology is many orders of magnitude (8 or more, IIRC) away from the best possible thermodynamic performance. The minimum energy use in flipping a bit is k*T*ln 2, so since k ~ 10^-23 and T ~ 10^2, the minimum waste heat produced per bit-flip is ~ 10^-21...

Re: Neutron stars and Magnetic Waves

How does a stellar body composed of chargeless particles produce a magnetic field? Neutron stars are not just composed of neutrons. Unfortunately they're extremely complicated objects and our observational window is narrow, so there remain many unanswered questions about them. It's thought that not...
