Re: Another PM change for Australia
I dunno if it got mentioned earlier in the thread and I'm too lazy to scan for it, but rumour persists that Abbott was told to ditch Hockey or get rolled, and he gave serious thought to it but ultimately his pride got in the way. I mean the guy couldn't face the media until nearly lunchtime the next...

Both Albo and Plibers are competent orators but Shorten has his hand firmly on the lid of the bickie tin, so basically, yeah. Greens do the legwork, then ALP badmouths them and tries to steal their pie money.

Xenophon's a rare bird. He alone is how we can forgive SA for Pyne and Bernardi.
About a year ago the Unenvironment Minister got castigated by the press after he used Wikipedia to try and support the party line(climate change is bullshit and we don't want to hear another word about it)

And of course, Johann Pachelbel would grimace and say 'guys, there are other chord progressions.'

I heard one angle that he was falling asleep and the manager made a play for the gun, with the practically and tragically inevitable result. But I wasn't there, and the people who were are either not talking for operational reasons or are going to need to spend time discussing it with professional c...

Not all Aussies, but a lot of us are working hard to keep those that buy into the Murdoch press's interpretation of events on the actual facts.

Global Mean Temperature was Surlethe's story. Duchess's story was called something else. Both were bleak and scary, although GMT was supposed to have a more hopeful tone in a long-view kind of way. But that won't save my (grand)children.

You're not wrong about specifying periods. In the casual discussions that we're had until now, he'll be talking about the war one minute and then suddenly it's 1960 in rural Victoria.
I'll keep you guys posted on developments.

Re: Attn Historians and/or Polish people
I've already got a bunch of notes, and I'm going to get a recorder so I have sessions to listen to. This isn't the problem, though I am aware that there is a definite time limit on that front. The problem is where to begin looking for confirmation of his stories, or at least supporting evidence. It'...

Attn Historians and/or Polish people
A little background. My stepmother is the child of what used to be called 'new Australians'; post-war immigrants displaced from Europe. Her mother, who died last week, was Belorussian, and had been sent to Germany in the 30s to be married off as part of a long-term business arrangement which didn't ...

Re: STO questions
It's easy to accuse them of being mean-spirited capitalists, but have you played any of the revamped story content? For example, the entire Borg/Undine campaign got redone, it looks and plays well, adds to the developing narrative and foreshadows a number of plot elements to follow. And Michael Dorn...

Re: Harley Davidson is testing an electric motorcycle
I do understand it completely: They're marketing to people who want loud motorcycles that look like something from the past, instead of reliability, performance, etc. That's not a criticism of Harley (except for the fact they're not very reliable), it's a criticism of the people who buy them anyway...

Re: Australian PM gets the John Oliver treatment
Abbott and his gang in opposition spent the three years between elections running off at the mouth with ad hominem attacks on the PM(Gillard, then Rudd) with the help of News Limited. Since the election these people have gone on to commit nearly every bit of bad politics they accused the previous go...

Re: In which gun-owners behave like spoiled children
In Australia, the last time someone walked into a restaurant with an AR-15 it ended very fucking badly. As a result, you can't get weapons like that anymore. At all. It is not a statistical anomaly that there hasn't been a repeat occurrence in the eighteen years since.
