I almost without fail play the Romulans... decent diplomats, powerful cloaked warships, and an intel capability that only the Cardassians really match. I do like the Cardassians as well: the Federation has good ships and a strong advantage with science and diplomacy, but you just can't play aggressi...

Some of the novels have some interesting toys that would help the Feds in this: either "Dreadnought" or "Battlestations" (I forget which) had some "field transporters" that could be deployed to a planet to provide transporter capability in the abscence of a starship ove...

I was thinking about the theory of moral development because of another thread in this section. It's been a while since psych class so I only remember the gist of it: basically, the vast majority of the population is at the second level: "right" and "wrong" are what the law (or t...

I'd be nervous about labeling "actions against society's best interests" as necessarily being evil. I would balk at labeling an act "evil" because it hurts society... not wearing seatbelts and speeding costs society billions in injuries and claims hundred of lives a year, but I d...

I remember the Pi thing, and I'll have to find the passage when i'm back on my home PC. If my memory serves me, the passage in question describes the width of the earth and (despite the error where Pi would have to equal 3 for the dimensions to be right) is often held up as proof of the Bible's &quo...

See, the Federation Cultists have only looked on the Crawling Chaos in a veiled form (scripts for "Voyager".) To look upon the such eldritch horrors in their true shape is to lose one's sanity, becoming a gibbering wreck rather than a man... ...nevermind, I just remembered who I'm talking ...

Has anyone pointed out to this bunch that by petitioning for government reparations they (as taxpayers) are basically picking their own pockets?

Nevermind... that's going to work about as well as reasoning with a Pentehostiles. :(

I can sum it up pretty easily: I saw 5 showings of The Phantom Menace on opening day, starting at 1 after midnight. I've now easily seen it more than 40 times. Enterprise is something my roommate is watching when I walk through the living room to go out for a smoke. I tried to have an open mind watc...

I think all that needs to be said about Federation ground forces is that we're talking about the Napoleonic Army or knights on foot, and a Fed victory comes down to "do they have transporters?"

Maybe, with luck and a lot of casualties, 1000 Fed Marines could take out the Smurfs.

What do you expect? It's Georgia! Where the family trees have no branches, creationism is bound to take hold. *hears "Dueling Banjos" playing in the background* I'm hoping that the Supreme Court ends up smacking their faces right off, and then attaches them to their asses where they belon...

I stand by the comparison because I'd be doing the same thing you're doing: claiming on the basis of a few examples that something is in general use. By the way, why does the Trek side like to pull metaphasic shields out of their ass all the time in vs. debates if they don't help against weapons fir...

A large portion of the Federation's population throws themselves willingly into C'thulhu's maw just to escape life in the Federation. C'thulhu dies of a severly ruptured stomach. Trek wins, to the dismay of the galaxy.

Question... How could the Federation have won the Dominion war with only 1,800 capital ships? Okay, so now you're saying that metaphasic shields may or may not be less effective than regular shields and this may or may not be due to Geordi not having the program right. Still, it's a "revolutionary" new technology. So, why isn't it on all Federation ships? Why do they continue to us...

I didn't see it mentioned, but aside from the pledge of allegence being altered in 1954 by an act of Congress, they also changed the national motto from "E Pluribus Unum" ("From Many, One") to "In God We Trust" in 1956 and added "In God We Trust" to the money ...

This is the way I always understood it: Because of Adam and Eve, everyone is damned. Every last one of us. It doesn't matter how well you behave in this life: if you don't accept Jesus as your lord and savior you go to hell. Original sin doesn't get the same mention it used to (at least with the mor...

My Two Cents

I remember another bit of technology that was hailed as a "revolutionary advance" in Federation ship-building and then vanished without a trace from there. Remember transwarp drive, anyone? Let's see, why did it vanish? Oh yeah, it didn't work. So sad... That would be my take on this: Star...
