Re: New Godzilla movie
And I think I just realized I'm coming to the defense of "realism" here because I'm confusing realism with depicting the monster (and people reacting) well. I don't think I'd care if the movie had Gotengo or a Super X (I'd prefer a Super X purely for nostalgic reasons), but I wouldn't want...

Re: New Godzilla movie
I liked Cloverfield but I thought it was much more of an amusement park ride. It even had scenes where the monster came dangerously close to the cameraman but he got away just in time (except, of course, at the end). There was little time to absorb what was happening. Did anybody else see Edwards' f...

Re: New Godzilla movie
Wait, isn't Godzilla an irradiated cross between a T-Rex and a Stegosaurus or some dumb shit? In Godzilla vs. King Ghidorah (1991 or 92, I think) the characters find out he was a mutated Godzillasaurus - basically a T-Rex-like dinosaur with very small Godzilla-like spines on his back. The Showa era...

Re: New Godzilla movie
Yeah, Gareth Edwards is the guy who directed the movie "Monsters" which was released in 2010 or so. The titular monsters were more suggested than they were shown during the course of the movie but when they did show up they were cool.
"Monsters" was also a decent character study.

Re: Let Us Discuss Bungie's Destiny
Myth 2 was a game where you had limited units and you did have to rove around the map, cleaning up bad guys. I'm not sure if the units you lost during missions counted against you in the end - I've never heard of that. I liked Myth 2 at the time and at least a few people I knew swore by it as being ...

Re: Confessions of an Ex-Moralist
I think his point is that you shouldn't take a position and then beat people over the head with the facts of it in a hope to change their minds. So he just replaced "You should change your ways because I think it immoral" to "You should change because I think you are uninformed and do...

Not even! He no longer thinks there is something as objective morality, like "It's wrong to do X because of consequence Z". He thinks that desire subsumes moral discussions. We typically desire for children to be safe from harm, right? So, according to this guy, talk about the morality of ...

As someone who has at least played Stalker, but is also interested in the brothers' works, I'm sad to hear that he passed. In fact, when I was reading about the two of them I hadn't realized one of them had died!
Although I'd only read a synopsis, I thought Roadside Picnic was a pretty neat story.

The guy writing the letter also made the assumption that kids watch the news in the morning and that they might apparently be influenced by her size. Maybe her size is a problem, but it's hers to act on or not.

Poster: RazorOutlaw (Did I miss something here? Were people doing that on purpose?) Anyway I've got two songs here by the group Ayreon (they pretty much do prog. rock operas). The first song is from the album "Human Equation", which is itself a rock opera about a guy who attempts to commit...

I thought of Assassin's Creed 2 as being a revenge plot, but I can't say why they went in that direction. Initially I thought that was a great hook to make me like the character of Ezio because Altair seemed like such a no-nonsense character (at this point I'd played all of fifteen minutes of the fi...

Re: Let's make "Imperial Guard"
So, something like Gears of War's cover system with higher lethality for enemy weapons? And maybe this time levels could have somewhat destructible cover? I'm thinking of "Black" where you could hide behind, say, a concrete pillar, but it would be whittled down by enemy fire until you had ...

Also interesting is the use of the wailing noise from the original ALIEN trailer...which I only know from watching all the extra features on the ALIEN Quadrilogy DVDs. I'm kind of excited to see it.

Re: Consequentialism - is it ultimately flawed ethical idea
I don't have time to get into detail but I think I can give at least one point supporting Consequentialism over Rule based ethics (Deontological, I think). Deontological ethics can have you support a rule, like "never lie", under any circumstances, i.e., regardless of the consequence. Beca...

That reminds me of the website "Retrojunk" that catalogs various advertisements, TV show openings, etc. from the 70's, 80's, and 90's. Although I can't watch any shows from any of those decades on the website, a lot of the commercials are hosted through Youtube. I was able to see advertise...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 2 discussion (spoilers)
Off the top of my head I can't remember Pod's age in the book, but that actor does look close to the age I envisioned him anyway. Baseless rumor I heard from one of these "ASoIaF" websites leads me to ask: are they trying to combine book's 2 and 3 into a single season? Or all of book 2 and...

Who gives a shit about specific tourist attractions? I just want to go visit a city which has been standing for over a thousand years. That's one thing I can't get anywhere on this entire continent. Sections of Paris have very small cobblestone streets. That's kind of peculiar because all the stree...

I dicked around in Far Cry 2's map editor to create a level with as much explosion/flammable things as possible. It would have been nice to have bots/enemies in them as I might have gotten a little extra mileage out of that part of the game. *sigh* Such an interesting game, I was just too awful at t...

Since you say "character" and not "antagonist" I'm going to offer the cyclops from Hercules, if only because he was the only one of the Titans released that I can remember actually destroying a city. He was only beaten after Hercules got his god-like strength back.

Ok, I don't think my cross-posting this here will be much of an issue since the Testing thread will get deleted anyway. I like it. Maybe it's easy to write bad-ass dialogue but I could hear Samuel L. Jackson's voice in my head as I read the comic, so you've got me that far. Hmm, and I thought having...

*sigh* That was an assumption I had made at my start of playing SC2 a year ago or so, because of the CD key and requirement for email. I figured it wouldn't have happened at all, or a great deal less, compared to the first Battle.net used in Starcraft. I spoke in ignorance, my bad.

Even if not I'm really not fussed about needing to log in to a game that has lots of online functionality. This. I was annoyed at first about having to login to play Starcraft but I was impressed with the new Battle.net features. Selecting matches, keeping people's accounts "straight" (no...

I'm glad people are so desperate to dislike change they are talking about rumored speculation about battle.net from 2003. I wonder if these people, in the security of their own minds, recognise that this behaviour is simply knee-jerk reactionism, or if they think their bizarre fears are well-founde...
