Re: Stephen Hawking on Breakthrough Starshot

I'm not too sure something a few grams can count as a space craft... or how it will feature a camera and comm equipment to return the images... or how the hell we will be accurate enough with a laser over such distances to hit something so small.

Re: Trump's Solar Wall

I'm not quite sure a technology used for 800-2000 meter lengths is quite ready for deployment over 2000 miles. Many of the claims are nay on wonderous especially when they claim it will be cheaper than current simpler and easier to maintain/build normal hv cabling. All the deomonstration models are ...

Re: Question - Imperial Navy 40k Ship Design

Chaos ships should be a better indication of older ships. I've never quite understood the design choice there for Chaos ships, they bare no resemblance to Imperial designs at all, its not even a problem that Chaos took off the gribbles and replaced them with demons, the actual hull doesn't even con...

Re: Theresa May calls snap General Election for June 8th

and his mobilisation of the young vote alone almost guarantee future success. I'm not sure I'd go that far, he may have got 1-2 million votes from new voters but he still lost, he has to keep them interested enough to vote for him at the next election which is definitely not a given, they can quite...

Re: Trump's Solar Wall

You don't need to do that, you just have normal wire coming out at the tapping out points where necessary. Although I think superconducting transformers are better than non-superconducting ones so it would be probably better to do that part inside the sheath. Other sources would be nuclear, wind, f...

Re: Trump's Solar Wall

My way of doing it would be to have a MgB2 superconducting power line you are using anyway for power from other sources to run alongside the solar wall. Can you plug lv inverters directly into a superconducting power line? What other sources are you intending to power from it? Where are you getting...

Re: Trump's Solar Wall

Thats not the problem with the solar wall though, a UHV is good if you have a lot of generaiton (like a Three Gorges Dam) in one area and a mega city like Beijing in another. With this you have a very thin strip of lv generation stretching 2000 miles.... thats not a good fit for anything, you can't ...

Re: Question - Imperial Navy 40k Ship Design

I suppose another interesting one is a lot of the really big imperial ships even predate the imperium and yet they also have giant eagles and skulls ect... did the golden age of technology humans also have a thing for giant eagles or have they done sufficient work on these rare ships that they can't...

Re: Trump's Solar Wall

Is Trump liable to get sign off on vast sums of money for no particular reason just because its related to 'the wall'? I'm not even sure what you would do with a superconducting power line system to move wall mounted solar... you would need substations every couple of km so why bother with the super...

Re: Question - Imperial Navy 40k Ship Design

Were Imperial ships less decorated in the 30K period? Most of the ships in service today (atleast the bigger ones) were in service then too... most of the art of ships I can see by googling Horus Heresey space battle appears to show the ships with similar levels of giant gold eagles and statue work.

Re: Trump's Solar Wall

Its not really a practical way of deploying solar, your transmission costs would be huge as your spreading lv equipment out over a line rather than clumping it around your transformers and inverter equipment. Also lots of it will be literally in the middle of no where where there is no demand so aga...

I guess they can't allow cash to be stored even in an automatic dispenser... plus smart phone #cool. I know this will appeal to some I just don't see the appel. If they can actually get the system working so that you just show a bunch of items to a camera and it knows what they are then that would b...

Yes but it relies on the person watching the CV being awake and then getting in touch with the police. Not a problem in a city centre location but kind of limiting for anywhere else.

Re: Grenfell Tower Block Fire in London

Philip Hammond has said the same, the cladding was illegal under existing planning regulations. I imagine the contractor, building inspector and the fire official who signed it off are losing their jobs and facing criminal charges as part of the investigation, it will depend if the council knew it w...

I'd be super impressed if the scanner that takes a picture to identify items in your hands works reliably! It seems a very easy thing if it prevents you leaving that people are going to panic because it refused to identify that bag of sweets in your hand, the scope for thievery is massive too, guess...

Having not read the story but I'll just jump in here real quick-- public libraries aren't as common in the UK as they are in the US (as far as I know, I could well be wrong). Regardless of IRL commonality, given the potential effects of reading magical texts and learning the wrong thing, I can easi...

https://fullfact.org/europe/norway-eu-payments/ Going for a Norway model would not save a great deal though, between 15% and 25% (£1-2bn) of our current contributions and that doesnt take account of some grants we would have to pay out for being part of other schemes. I can see that being a compromi...

Thanas is right, I'm not sure if May could have run a worse campaign or done more in her person or party to actively sabotage her vote... and yet she still hangs on and significantly increases her vote. Abbott really needs to be removed from the front bench, its crap like hers that made the greens a...
