Re: Something big

Alpha-strike in a beam sounds about right. TBH I haven't really tried to scale it, since it's so speculative. The principle is about right though. I'll annotate the turrets at some point. *snip* Thanks for confirming and great work on all the non dagger shaped ships. The Crusader looks awesome. :)

Re: Something big

Bah I had trouble converting scientific notation to si units. So you are envisioning it being an alpha strike concentrated into a beam? And since an alpha strike will be about 1 exaton, I think it might make more sense for it to be 1 exaton beam then. Also will you be updating the turret explanation...

I don't know, this seems to be very suited for a game. It's like they took a story writer for games and told him to write a screen play for movies. :?

Re: How powerful could a hard sci-fi civilization be?

Since the op never really specified that the Soft-Sci society had to defeat the Hard-Sci society, I am going to go on a bit of a tangent compared to the rest of the thread. The biggest problem a Hard-Sci has with the Soft-Sci society would be mobility and the application of power. Since we are assum...

I'm looking for a Game...

...that is a 2d space trading/combat in the similar vein to FlashTrek: Broken Mirror. I'm a stickler for old fashion two-d games especially if they can be modded.

So far I've looked at freelancer but it wasn't quite what I wanted. If anyone can suggest titles to me it would be great!

Re: What would happened if I cored the Earth?

I would second the 'Nothing' comment. While the amount of matter removed (5m dia cylinder through the earths mass) is not inconsiderable...I do not think such a 'relatively' small amount would cause much change. Not even sure if it would allow the plates some 'quick wriggle room' as things shifted....

What would happened if I cored the Earth?

As the title states, what would happen if I instantaneously drilled a 5 meter hole all the way through the earth? I know that such hole would be devastating to the earth's ecology, but I would like to know if there is anything specific that I am missing. I am pretty sure that there would be a massiv...

Re: Do you have a Sci Fi universe?

Right now I have two "universes" running though my head. The first one is frankly a huge/wank (your choice) setting that I like using to cross over to other works of fiction. It is loosely based on the Culture series and the anime Nanoha but taken to an extreme. They are an idealized socie...

Re: Sci-Fi vs Fantasy

Depends on a lot.But. A technological side has the advantage that the engineers who built and designed the weapons need not stand on the front line weilding them unlike your typical fantasy mage. Also mages tend to be rarer due to them typically requiring some inner gift / quirk of birth / midichlo...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover

So far I like this story, but like Mass Effect I don't like how it is heavily reliant on the codex for back story. It would definitely be interesting to see mass Mass Effect ground forces attacking a bolo :D (Yes, I did that on purpose) Yay, two pages! But I sort of disagree. The codexes imply that...

I like!
However, it seems that the Triumvirate section seems unnecessary (partly because I do not remember it from the show and partly because it seems to detract from the main story line thus far).

I need help finding a Battletech crossover fiction

As the title states, I need help finding a Battletech fiction as I lost my bookmark to that work. I remember it involving modern earth transported about a thousand years into the future into Battletech universe. Also in that fic, earth was able to fight back a minor pirate invasion and steal a coupl...

Re: Something big

Oooh! He is back and the saga continues. :D Anyways since Fractalsponge was talking about crew complement, I thought it would be fun to see how many people this ship could carry if only one percentage of the ship was dedicated to crew space. So the volume of the ship is about 12 * 2/2 * 6/2 + 3 * 2 ...
