Re: What kind of stipend does the Justice League pay?
If stipends are needed, most likely Bruce Wayne or one of his tame lawyers has set up fake identities for each JLA member. They can then be set up as employees of Wayne Enterprises or one of its subsiduaries using these IDs, and paid a regular salary. As long as any applicable taxes are paid on the ...

Re: Brexit and General UK politics thread
I don't know if the new PM will need to win a parliamentary confidence vote or not. Strictly speaking, they wouldn't. For example, Gordon Brown took over as PM from Tony Blair in 2007 without the need for a vote of confidence, but he was installed as new leader of the Labour Party without a competi...

Re: Scenario Drill: Nuclear missile attack
I got 15 miles away at 14 degrees, almost exactly due north. Even assuming an airburst I'm too far away to suffer any significant damage from the blast wave. I fill up the bath with cold water and make sure I'm in the part of the house with south-facing windows so I won't be visually affected by the...

Leave them alone. For all practical purposes they are just wild animals and have nothing to offer humanity. There's certainly no basis for any kind of trading or diplomatic relationship.

Alright, I think everyone in this thread would be in agreement with a statement that the US being the first to engage in violence would be deplorable, horrific, and wrong. However - what if it is the NK starting a fire fight? Dropping a nuke on the US or Japan or opening fire on Seoul. What level o...

Re: Labour and Ukip suffer as Tories make big gains
If you want your mind truly boggled, the Tories managed to get more local councillors in bloody Scotland, even now. True, but only because the Labour vote has collapsed and the Tories are scooping up the pro-Union vote. The SNP were still the overwhelming victors in Scotland, the Tories have 'jumped...

Re: Duke of Edinburgh to stand down from royal duties for good from August, Buckingham Palace announces
This question has been bugging me all day... If Scotland leaves the UK, would he still be the Duke of Edinburgh? Yes. The SNP have said in the past that if Scotland becomes independent, the Queen would still be head of state , so the DoE would retain his title. Although if Scotland then becomes a R...

Re: King of Thailand has died
From said Wiki article (which was actually quite comprehensive as far as I could tell, probably written/edited by some people in the know), it does sound like the Thai people were mildly concerned about when his son inherits the throne. Apparently Prince whatshisface's wife is unpopular, and the Pr...

One of its themes was how the characters interacted with a world that aged around them. One way to retire was to just stay planet side as their friends a...

Re: Age appropriate literature?
I think a big factor is how violent or graphic material is presented. I was reading horror story compilations when I was 11 years old and James Bond novels by the time I was 14 (with the attendant violence, sex and general ludicrousness) but I didn't grow up to be sociopathic or anything. Everything...

The Wicker Man DC (the 1973 original with Christopher Lee, not the Nicolas Cage comedy version) is a huge improvement. The cinematic version is just an incoherent mess; the DC is a quite watchable, if somewhat eccentric, horror/suspense film.

In this situation the only sensible thing to do is turn the deal down, as nothing is worth eternal damnation. Also, as I now have incontrovertible proof of the existence of God, I convert from atheism and become a True Believer, and hope for salvation (or at least a spell in Purgatory rather than He...

The Czechs make the best beer in the world, so make sure you try some of it. A couple of bars I liked were U Vejvodu in the old town centre and Čili Bar.

Life and Fate by Vasily Grossman. I'm not very far into it but it's surprisingly readable so far, although keeping track of the characters is a bit tricky with all those lengthy Russian names to cope with.

Re: What other 2000ad properties could be made into movies
I think The V.C.s could work as a movie but it would just be a fairly generic space-warfare movie, and the series ran in 2000AD so long ago hardly anyone would remember it.
(Edit: on checking the series was apparently revived about 10 years ago).

Step one is to guarantee my indefinite personal survival. I have it clone twenty healthy replicas of me ...
