Re: Brainstorming - laptop stuttering (limited info)

Since you're spit-balling, eliminate everything but the external connection (the MP3 player on USB) first. See if you can replicate the behavior without the MP3 player plugged in -- take one of the files off the player and run it off the laptop. If you can't replicate the behavior without the MP3 pl...

Re: Avatar review thread - NO SPOILERS UNTIL FRIDAY

Is it just me or was it obvious that there was originally a shot where Jake and Navi-chica connect their little head-tail-ethernet-ports together, but it was cut because someone was afraid it would be seen as obscene? It seemed weird to me that we see all the nominally non-sentient creatures connect...

Re: Millions of "missing" Bush emails recovered

Which is stupid even from the standpoint of an ordinary organization. You have a certain degree of legal obligation as merely an employer to archive emails from every peon in your organization to protect yourself from lawsuits (easy example: sexual harassment suits). Much less the Whitehouse. Of co...

Re: Millions of "missing" Bush emails recovered

That said it would not surprise me at all that this was merely negligence on the White House's behalf. The entire White House staff probably sends tens of thousands of e-mails every day and I very much doubt if anyone gives a shit about archiving most of the mid to lower level assistants' e-mails e...

Re: Sleep Paralysis

I wouldn't even know how to go about attempting to lucidly dream as all my dreams since I can remember are lucid. There are a number of techniques that all have to do with messing around with sleeping and wakefulness around the edges of sleep -- at the beginning of the night. Another common method ...

Re: Sleep Paralysis

I get sleep paralysis virtually every time I sleep outside my usual sleeping time. Afternoon naps are virtually guaranteed to end in sleep paralysis. They're almost always preceded by lucid dreams; I'm not sure why. I'm not sure about the biology, but there's a strong connection between lucid dream...

Re: Sign-language and technical vocabulary

As a deaf person, I would in this situation be quite willing to accommodate your telling the interpreter to finger-spell certain technical terms. Sending this deaf person a list of frequently used terms with definitions may help (ask first if he wants it though). Fortunately the guy I need to suppo...

Re: Sign-language and technical vocabulary

If you're asking for a quantity, be absolutely certain to ask "how many," as that is a very different word in sign than "what," specifically to counter this sort of issue. I was worried about exactly that sort of thing. You'd think a professional interpreter would realize the difference, but I'm su...

Sign-language and technical vocabulary

I've recently run into a bit of a challenge at the office that perhaps folks here have some insight into. I'm the CAD Manager/IT tech/part-time developer for a mid-size engineering firm. I work out of the main office, but I also support our remote offices. And one of the guys I support in one of tho...

Re: Uganda to kill all gays with US congressionals' support

Do you think this is unique? Don't you realize that a huge number of Muslim countries in the world already have the death penalty for homosexuality? So are we going to fire up our Abrahms tanks next and invade Saudi Arabia? Do you realize how ridiculously nonsensical and impractical this is? Am I s...

Re: Uganda to kill all gays with US congressionals' support

Further, the US State Department has refused to take any action in regards to Uganda, even a verbal condemnation in private or public such as Stephen Harper or the UK gave. Indeed, Hilary Clinton even went out of her way to recently praise Uganda as a "model state" that other african ones should im...

Re: SGU 108: "Time" (Spoilers)

For someone like me who didn't watch SG-1 much at all, and only saw one or two episodes of SGA, was this a wholly lifted plot or was it a new twist on a theme they've visited before? Are these kinds of "concept-heavy" episodes common for Stargate? Because it really worked for me in a way that they h...

Re: Astrophysics question

Use the relation arc length = radius * angle. 16.01" is ~7.75e-5 radians. With an arc length of 185LD, that's a radius of ~6500LY. Of course, I re-read my original answer and for some reason I put 9.01" and 181LD in, which is obviously not going to generate the right number no matter what I do.

Re: Astrophysics question

Your assumption about angles is wrong. The angle I'm referring to is simply the measurement of angle on the celestial sphere; it doesn't matter how wide it is or what the radius of the sphere is. But you're on the right track. You can assume that the period of the Earth's orbit is negligibly small ...

Re: Astrophysics question

If I understand it right, 1" is the arc subtended by a 1AU object at 1parsec (206265 AU). So if we've got 9.01" and objects that are 181 light-days (~31300 AU) apart, and if I've done my math right... that's 11300 LY. My guess is that's the wrong answer, and that I'm not accounting for the close co...

Re: What makes a great Business card?

Depending on who your potential clientele is, you may want to avoid doing dark cards like some of those shown. If you plan on going after any business clients, make sure your cards can be easily scanned-and-read into a business card scanner with OCR. Lots of businesses will scan cards so they can us...

If you've been relatively happy with Ubuntu, try Linux Mint . It's basically just Ubuntu bundled with a "just works" philosophy on multimedia codecs, video drivers, Flash, etc. If you're just looking for a simple Linux install so you can get some work done, you'll be hard-pressed to beat that. Re: How to Slow Warming: Paint Everything White

This idea has been reflected in the various green-building standards here in the US for a number of years. The LEED standard (which has some serious flaws, but that's irrelevant for this discussion) grants a point for using a white roof. As others have mentioned, it's not just the albedo reflecting ...

It is not, and never has been, a peer-reviewed journal. That being said, the main articles are generally written by the researchers themselves (who are "real" scientists with peer-reviewed work). So it's a "popular science" magazine in the sense that it's not being peer-reviewed, but most of it is ...

Daniel is Starbuck, guys. And Cavil knows it -- I suspect he's the only one who knows at this point (although we'll find out Ellen learns next episode, I suspect). Remember how Ellen was saying what a sadist Cavil was? He interfered with the genetic material of the Daniel line, corrupting it. But le...

Because Season 1, Episode 1 ("33") wasn't almost entirely about Baltar giving himself over to God or anything (oops, character-driven inside an overall story!). So, what does that mean? What did we ultimately get out of Baltar giving himself to God? From his perspective , things seemed to get bette...

It's been there since the beginning or did you forget to pay attention in season 1? Uhhhh it's gotten a lot worse since then. At least back then there was some hope of eventually coming to some resolution or answer as to just what was going on, but now it's looking like we'll probably eventually se...

That's why it's so much easier to simplify it into a purely rights-based argument, where animals have rights and we are violating them, which is why PETA has adopted that tactic. It doesn't seem to be working so hot for them. If you're going to oversimplify an argument, you want it to be one that p...

Well, and we need to account for whatever precog is there, too. That's why I asked if there was anything in the novelization that gives a bit more insight into Luke's actual thoughts at the time. The only precog we see Luke have is when he is meditating and concentrating on it. I'm sure he has basi...
