Methinks this isn't a "safe" oasis. UCWS Duty Before Glory is/was a Coalition warship mentioned in snippets of back-story (and I've been eagerly awaited more about them). It may well be that Halo blood will be seen as a threat by them. . .

Re: Megaengineering challenge: Polar refrigeration system
[. . .]our current meterological models have some difficulty of predicting the weather further than two weeks. Climate research refuses to predict the climate on a longer scale than 100 years, because 1) the climate is a chaotic system and therefore tends to diverge drastically even with nearly ide...

Hell, lately the EPA in the US has been bitching because of how pitiful (according to many) the regs are that restrict how much ozone our industries can release into the environment. Ozone in the stratosphere protects us from UV, but ozone in the troposhpere is a harmful pollutant. Tropospheric ozo...

Yeah, Testor also put out an 'Aurora' which was basically a triangle with jet engines; not sure how much of that was conjecture and how much was based upon what was actually known about the F-117 at the time. Always liked the lines of that one, although in retrospect the engines it had sitting on i...

Captain Yates shook his head. "That is a generous offer, but I must refuse. I propose a counter offer: we will both meet on the surface of the fourth planet of this system, in an open field, with our respective ships on the opposite side of said planet." The wind-swept plains of the fifth...

Re: Traditional Marriage, A Look to the Past
But the Council of Trent was not the only or next change. In between, there was the Fourth Lateran Council (1215), which put in the requirement that priests announce all marriages in the church. So it seems to be a gradual progression of church/state control on marriage, but not being a historian, I...

I'd like to see them try and enforce that beyond their own metaphorical backyard. The more zealous parish priests could certainly demand penances and generally make trouble about it, aided and abetted by the local gossips, but there would be little fear of repercussions if the more easygoing and/or...

Re: Traditional Marriage, A Look to the Past
Uh, that's not precisely accurate- you're projecting back anachronistic things into a period they never were. In a large portion of the middle ages under canon law, you didn't need a priest to get married. A simple verbal statement, even with no witnesses around, was sufficient. Or even a promise t...

That's rather surprising, I thought we hadn't been able to hold anti-hydrogen for anywhere near that long. Developing the ability to do that was a priority of the ALPHA project; it's a necessary precursor to their ultimate goal, which is conducting experiments testing CPT symmetry between hyrdogen ...

One thing that has been really understated in this thread is that ADHD is not just one single disorder. In my son's case, he was diagnosed with ADHD-Primarily Inattentive, and for that, stimulants such as Ritalin don't work. He's on Stratera, and it has made a world of difference; his ability to foc...

I also don't recall tornadic activity on this scale before in my lifetime (short as it is at 25 years), so I'm wondering how much climate change is affecting these storm cycles. I wonder too, but without evidence, such wondering is merely speculation. Deniers seem to get off on speculation, but we ...

Yes, it's disproportionate, but one also needs to look at the context. Back in the late '80s, there was a big shitstorm in Canadian universities regarding sexism in various faculties--especially engineering. This has left the universities very cautious, and I suspect they're hiding behind the excuse...

I think it's high time the Conservative Party stop being referred to as PC. The Progressive part was dropped (both in name and policy) when the Canadian Alliance and the Progressive Conservative Party merged.

Curiously, in Quebec, the BQ have dropped to second place. . .behind the NDP. I say that's good news, but it remains to be seen whether this will translate to any changes on election day.

I'm not particularly experienced at collecting wine, but for me, the primary reason is to get wine a few years before its prime while its still readily available and affordable. I've found it useful to go wine tasting (either at good wine retailers or at the actual wineries) and take notes. I've als...
