Taiwan elections - big middle finger to China... https://edition.cnn.com/2024/01/13/asia/taiwan-presidential-election-results-intl-hnk/index.html# Let's see how that turns out - just for the files - who had Chinese invasion on their bingo card? Re: The Ultraman Thread
I watched the whole 'New Gen' period starting with Ginga* and up through Taiga, since they're smaller and thus easier for me to consume. I enjoy them to various extents, with Geed and Orb being IMO the best. Ultraman '66 really feels like a Showa era kaiju movie every week, only half an hour. Great...

Re: The Ultraman Thread
I think you should give them a go, especially Tiga. It's one of the peak of kaiju genre in terms of storytelling and also the quality/scale of effects for a toku tv show.

Re: The Ultraman Thread
My first ultra series proper was "Ultraman Mebius." I'm old enough to have caught airings of Ultra Seven on TBS in the early mornings every now and again. Z is a GREAT series, and they recently came out with a dub... that I've been meaning to get around to watching. The camerawork in Z is...

The Ultraman Thread
Thought I might as well create an Ultraman thread here for any people potentially interested in more Ultraman stuff. The new Ultra-series is coming out this July on simuldub on youtube, so it's a good fresh Ultra-series for new fans to get onboard. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MSnseh90pkg Older cl...

Re: New Star Wars Films announced. Plus Ahsoka
It will forever baffle me that out of forty years of EU, they chose to riff on possibly the mostly widely reviled for their capstone movie. There were worse ideas, but I don't think any got the airtime that Dark Empire did. Was it accidental? Was this a case of convergent evolution, perhaps? Are th...

Re: New Star Wars Films announced. Plus Ahsoka
First they say the Expanded Universe doesn't count, then they rip it off for ideas. While I hope the new stuff does well, can we please find new people to run it? The old EU may have been shit overall, but it did have some good ideas. I can't blame them for plundering it. Should have done that for ...

Three Body Problem Tv series
One of the most popular sci-fi in recent years has gotten a few adaptation. One of them is the Netflix's one by the people who did Game of Thrones. But there's several Chinese adaptation as well, including one live action and one animated one. The live action Chinese tv show is being released for fr...

Re: Twitter board agrees to $44 billion sale to billionaire Tesla founder Elon Musk
Tweet saying Twitter have been evicted from their Singapore office I wonder how long it will take to realize that he still has to pay those employees even if he's made it impossible for them to do any work. He won't, and muskrat is rich enough to make sure the courts say it's okay. Is Singapore tha...

Re: Shin Ultraman (Spoilers)
It's a decent remake of the original 66 show. I grew up with Ultraman and I'm wondering if some of the older members here have seen it. Seems like this will be the first introduction to many Godzilla fans to the Ultraman franchise. If you like this film, do check out the various tv series over the y...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
Yeah, as someone actually from SEA, I would say there's the huge issue of lumping SEA into one culture, when no such unified culture ever existed. Certainly nothing comparable to an "broad European" culture. Which is why giving local creators the ability to create fictional cultures based...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
With respect to Lindsey Ellis and Raya vs ATLA, much of that seems to have been people who were out to get her in the first place. No one seemed to care that Honest Trailers made that the core punchline of their bit on Raya, and and people seemed to prop up Raya as being better than it was in order...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border
I have no interest in WW3. I have no interest in Russia's borders being invaded unless absolutely required. (i.e to get back Ukraine citizens that Russia turns out to be holding in camps and the like). Quite frankly, the Ukraine taking back all it's lost territory, including Crimea, that should be ...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border
The power fantasy of fantasizing about expanding the war Putin started to actually defeating Putin and stopping him from launching another war? Because I think that's less expanding the war and more fantasizing about winning the war. It is a power fantasy because one, we know what Ukraine is doing ...

Re: Ukraine reacts to fears of Russian invasion as troops build up at the border
Quite frankly, Russia being dealt with needs to happen. Otherwise, if Putin remains in control of Russia, he'll just purge out anything he considers problematic, blaming them for the failure of the 'special operation', and then rebuild the Russian military. Probably under KGB level monitoring to pr...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
Just because it has done something right doesn't lessen the problems in anyway. So Airbender and Korra are equivalent to Disney 30s racist cartoons? I'm making this line of inquiry because I want to know what are the criteria is for determining severity - hence the jokes of quantifying gigajoules a...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
Just like how Avatar 2 casted roles for POC. Ironically, the first movie lacked the heinous offense that is casting Kate Winslet in her role lol so is it less-flawed in that respect? Anyway, I picked them (Cameron Avatar, Airbender, Kung Fu Panda, the Ghost in the Shell remake) cause they're recent...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
I'm using Airbender and Korra as comparisons because they're relatively recent (they intersect each other in timeline), I'm picking them precisely because I don't want to compare with something from a long time ago where yellowface was a thing. I guess Dr. Strange and the Ghost in the Shell movie a...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
Is it a hanging offense, or not? My line of inquiry is how severe is it? Hence the various comparisons because on one hand I think this is being taken out of proportion, but on the other hand I do believe representation matters. So there's grades of severity here. Like, Airbender and Korra and Kung...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
Shroom's overly attached to the movie and doesn't want to admit it has a flaw; I've done it myself plenty of times. People dislike it when something objectionable is pointed out about the movie they like so they try to make excuses. Hiding behind making jokes about the whole thing really isn't help...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
Of Kate Winslet specifically or the space aliens in general? Winslet. Getting a white-actor to act in with a "native-sounding" accent is bad and cringe no matter what sort of fantasy you are talking about. I do admit and have admitted it's a flaw but then I'm asking how big of a flaw is t...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
It's not even a one-for-one literal indigenous person role though but more indirect, an indigenous-style space alien, so it's actually a degree of separation away from Raya or Airbender/Korra roles that are generalized-Asian-humans. The problem isn't the degree of separation, it's the idea of there...

Re: Avatar: Way Of Water *spoilers*
It's annoying and should be improved upon but how does this scale in comparison to the great moral indignation of Cameron's Avatar and the Avatar cartoon? Like, is Cameron's Avatar the BDZ-capable ISD turbolasers compared to Airbender+Korra's Enterprise-D phasers to Raya's B5 multi-megaton-yield wa...
