Re: (Turkey)Occupy Gezi crackdown spins out of control

You call bullshit, then agree with me. Very confusing. Let me make it clear then: Democracy is not the same as majority rule. Quoting from your earlier post: Things that limit the power of the majority vote are inherently anti-democratic. Bullshit. The US has systems in place deliberately designed ...

Re: (Turkey)Occupy Gezi crackdown spins out of control

Democracy in the truest sense is just majority rule. Mob rule. Those with the most votes win. Bullshit. Democracy is simply rule by the people. It does not in any way say anything how exactly that rule is decided. It could be by absolute majority, it could be by relative majority, it could be by su...

Great match.

Bayern got lucky - they should have lost two players, but didn't.

And who is advising to do that (calling all colleagues racists and trying to get them disciplined by management)? What people were advising, is that he shouldn't just sit quietly, but say something to themwhen they spout racist shit. The tone and manner in which you say something makes huge differen...

Re: America now has more workers in solar than coal.

While there may indeed be wind always blowing somewhere, it might not be anywhere close to where you need it. Unless the windmills are evenly spread throughout the globe, theres no guarantee that they will be where you need them. Even simply interconnecting wind turbines close to each other already...

Re: America now has more workers in solar than coal.

Personally I'm imagining things like nuclear, hydroelectric, and geothermal being used for base load, with a rather large solar component that helps handle the peak demand period during daylight hours. Making that solar component cost-effective will therefore matter. I actually expect wind to take ...

Re: Belief in God correlated with better mental health outco

Er... no, that's not what I was arguing. I was arguing that if a patient already has religious beliefs that participation in religion shouldn't be discouraged, and options such as “pastoral counseling” should be on the table if appropriate to the individual. Also, if a patient was considering retur...

Re: Belief in God correlated with better mental health outco

I may have had a wrong impression (Broomstick may correct me if I'm wrong), but I thought she meant that if a belief in God/gods/higher power in general may be beneficial to some individuals, that should not be discounted and ignored but rather try to understand how it might be used to keep them me...

Metahive, (and to a lesser degree Dr.Trainwreck): Thats enough being helpful. That kind of stuff can go in PMs. Also, I'm disappointed that in the whole argument with Broomstick, nobody was really able to point out that she is arguing for something that this study in no way at all shows. The study s...

If you have something to compare it too, half a millimeter is humongous.

Using a straight-edge you can see discrepancies on a micrometer range.

I'd be up for it. I'd have to check if flying or train travel is cheaper from the Ruhrgebiet, and would also definitely be interested in finding ways to keep it cheap, but otherwise it shouldn't be too difficult to come along.

They definitely benefited from it.

Oh, and since several people got this point wrong: Germany (or the EU) never demanded that the Cyprus government fleece small savers. In fact, it was the Cypriot government who proposed to do that instead of just targeting large deposits.

That is my understanding of the situation as well. However, the conventional wisdom -among pretty much all groups in Germany, from the man in the street, to the politicians, to the journalists, to the scientific elite - is that Germany has such a large trade surplus and is doing so well is because G...

Re: What should the German generals have done? (RAR)

You do realise that even by December '46 the US only had around ten nuclear bombs available, all in the 20 or so kiloton range? The days of America being able to glass Eastern Europe were a loooong way off. Add to this the fact that all those bombs would have to be delivered by B-29's rather than m...
