Re: Underappreciated geniuses
I'll nominate Marc Bloch, a Jewish historian in France before World War II. He was a professor, and when the Nazis invaded he joined the resistance and was killed. He began, and was unable to complete, a work titled The Historian's Craft , which details a method to study history. A lot of what is in...

Re: Are Americans a Broken People?
Is it really true that people are passive because they are demoralized? I would argue that they are passive because they are selfish by nature, and a solid majority of people are still quite comfortable and happy. They have food in their bellies, gas in their tanks, a roof over their heads, etc. Su...

Re: Drunken Women Nearly Run Over By Subway
Gotta love the T. I'm surprised that the conductor was able to stop; those Orange, Blue, and Red Line trains tend to fly into their stations, whereas the Green Line trains take it a little slower. Green line trains don't tend to be in sunken troughs; they tend to be on the same plane as the passeng...

Re: Government health care rescues protesters at anti-government
As the old example goes, Somalia is an anarchy with a lot of guns. I would love to see how long any of these people would survive there without the government services that make their comfortable lives possible. I bet if we took just one service--say, the DoT snowplowing roads away for just one wint...

Re: Finally, an E-Reader I'd consider buying
As a side-note, does anyone know what the potential is for local, county, and university libraries to put their books online? It would be a massive project, but if they have the right to "loan" paper books, couldn't you do the same w/ e-books? Isn't that what the Google Books project is t...

Saturn's Biggest Ring
From CNN : (CNN) -- Scientists at NASA have discovered a nearly invisible ring around Saturn -- one so large that it would take 1 billion Earths to fill it. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has spotted a massive, nearly invisible ring around Saturn. NASA's Spitzer Space Telescope has spotted a massive...

I'm hoping that Tom Brady is back in shape this year. . . and doesn't get injured in the first game AGAIN.
Also, it's a good thing the Bills are playing the hall of fame game. Wouldn't want a professional team getting any injuries that early in the season.

Law enforcement investigations can involve a pretty wide array of disciplines. A little bit of psychology, finance, science, history, and engineering depending on what you're investigating. On a similar track, archaeology. A comprehensive site study draws from several fields, both historical and ex...

I am so glad that I go to school in the city. The worst we get are the LaRouchers and Greenpeace. I think I've seen maybe, maybe one street preacher on campus. Maybe one or two more in all of Boston. We're in a rather liberal area, though, so take that as you will.

An absurdly fancy-looking and imposing courthouse. Say what you will about them damned Yankees, but they do make cool-looking government buildings. Well, we did, anyway. We let the modernists sell us a bill of goods after the Second World War. Now they look like this: http://img36.imageshack.us/img...

They're. They are. Figure it out.
On the trailer--I really hope they don't fuck up this franchise. Toy Story was such a great movie, and Toy Story 2 was great as well. Hopefully, being Pixar, this will be of some quality.

Worked with an asshole recently--a self-styled electrician. I've been working in theaters for about 5 years now and trained by some of the best techies around, so I've got a pretty good handle on what I'm doing. Nevertheless, as a student employee and not a "professional," I still get stup...

Here at BU, it's tradition to go to the statue of Harry Agganis outside of the hockey arena and squeeze one of his ass cheeks for good luck on exams. If you walk across the seal in Marsh Plaza, you'll supposedly never graduate from BU. After each and every hockey game we win, the pep band (a group o...
