Re: We need to talk about Andor

Ep 10 solidifies that Andor is the best Star Wars series in years if not decades.

Re: Has anyone read HandOfThrawn45's stories?

It's quite good, imo. They do a lot of justice to the Legacy characters, as well as bring an innovative new conflict to the standard Star Wars formula. And there's a nice unintentional echo of the real-world global trauma of the past two years.

Not at all, I'm pretty sure; the central conceit of the fic is that peak oil screws over the world.

How realistic is "Global Peak" series now? (2021)

Global Peak was a fictional universe created by Duchess of Zeon back in 2007-2009, a vivid post-apocalyptic world after Peak Oil. I made a thread in December 2015 soliciting opinions about it. I remember back in 2008 I found the whole project to be vividly appalling about the breakdown of the U.S. ...

The Four Horsemen review - whatever happened to ‘New Atheism’?

The Guardian: Dawkins, Hitchens, Dennett, Harris ... were the apostles of atheism as fearless as they thought? Whatever happened to “New Atheism”? It was born in the febrile aftermath of 9/11, when belief in a deity – or, let’s be honest, specifically in Allah – seemed to some people a newly urgent...

Shadows of the Empire or The Force Unleashed?

Which of the two multimedia projects dealing with events that happened around the time of the original trilogy do you favor? Why? I prefer Shadows, because it retains the classic feel more, but also the direction it explored (bounty hunters and organized crime) was preferable to yet another iteratio...

The thing is, Jyn, like all of the characters in Rogue One, are barely written, because the true star of that show is the actual battle itself.

Re: 2016 US ELECTION: Official Results Thread

So, some time ago I made a thread critiquing "Global Peak" for having an unrealistic storyline. Its hyping of peak oil aside, I apologize. As it turns out, you could have Western nations descend into nativist near-fascism again. Mea culpa and I hope Duchess revisits that series and creates...

Modi in India, Abe in Japan, Duterte in the Philippines, whoever replaces Park Geun-hye in South Korea, Netanyahu, Erdogan... the far-right is marching everywhere. There's no continent without nationalists coming to power, except Oceania and Antarctica. It's not just in the West.

Re: Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens

I thought the movie had a good amount of storytelling minimalism, not in the Saxton Star Wars sense, which is why they barely explained a bunch of things. On the other hand, the opening scene had a bunch of maximalism mixed with the minimalism, in that there's a quick bunch of exposition from a char...

Re: How realistic is "Global Peak" series now?

Here's a question: self-employed doing what? Back before industrialization, that could mean something like taking unused and (hopefully) unclaimed land and turning it into a farm, maybe be employed as a farmhand until you manage to do that. Or taking a trade like becoming a trapper/hunter or becomi...

Well, locally speaking, it'd be interesting to see what the 2015 SD.net equivalent to this 2007 series would be.

So I suppose Surlethe's "Global Mean Temperature" ended up being the more plausible story? I suppose "Global Peak" teaches us that prognostication is hard, especially about the near future.

Has anyone read those stories and remember them? At the time, they seemed more like peak Bush-era paranoia. Now- well they seem somewhat more realistic, but they failed to predict Tesla and Trump, to pick two random signs of the times.

How realistic is "Global Peak" series now?

Global Peak was a really well-written story series by The Duchess of Zeon and others depicting the dystopia that results from the aftermath of peak oil. The U.S. breaks apart between an authoritarian emergency federal government and highly regressive far right governments. Much of Europe goes neo-f...
