Re: SUPERTHREAD: 2020 United States Elections
I also just noticed that fivethirtyeight is fudging their statistics a bit to make Bernie look weaker, and a contested convention look more likely. On their main page, they have a graphic showing the odds of different primary outcomes, with "no one" getting a majority (ie contested conven...

Re: Justice Department Inspector General rules Russia probe "justified and unbiased".
You do not know how a criminal investigation works. It doesn't matter if the investigation was fully justified and the evidence found as a result of granting the FISA warrants is all solid. The fact is they lied and tampered with evidence to obtain those warrants in the first place, which means bot...

Another problem is that the House of Lords and the House of Windsor has had practicall all their power taken away for the past century and change. Quite literally. Given that the House of Commons effectively controls the bureaucracy... ... yeah. The House of Windsor is essentially a puppet for the ...

Re: Jeffrey Epstein arrested in New York on child sex trafficking charges.
I have one problem with the blackmail theory: surely any attempt to blackmail people with this material would easily backfire? I mean Epstein personally selected the girls, any illegal activity would take place on his premises and lastly the people he would be blackmailing would be powerful people ...

Re: Trump Dump: Foreign Policy (Thread I)
So, why are people acting like this specifically is some sort of outrage? Trump presumably knows whether he colluded with Russia and he's already repeatedly said that he didn't. At this point you can't make a claim like that without saying that the FBI and company are lying/delusional and unreliabl...

Re: what is going on in Italy
I begin to see why proportional representation is not a magic bullet for democracy... The current Italian election system is not fully proportional, it's a mixed system with 37% of seats allocated using first past the post and 63% proportionally. Also note that the process to a degree worked as it ...

Re: Eurosceptics gain in Italian election
I don't know much about Italian politics, so can someone clarify: Is "Eurosceptic" here just a polite euphemism for racist/xenophobe/fascist/Neo-Nazi? According to my understanding, yes and no. On other hand you have The League and the smaller party Brothers of Italy which are eurosceptic...

Re: Global future in chains or more freedom at a high cost
One question is that can we even rely on these right-wingers being consistently anti-globalization? After all it was Wallonia, not Poland or Hungary that held back the CETA deal. Hell, many of the Brexiteers are openly free marketers whose one objection to the EU, among others, was that it restricte...

If use GDP nominal because when you compare which economy is larger than any other (something that I am interested in), GDP nominal is what we usually use. However I can use PPP , and GDP PPP Per capita since that's what you're interested in. PPP will incorporate purchasing power, and the figures f...

Huh? According to IMF numbers Finland in 2016 is around 9% larger than it was in 2006 GDP wise. It grew in 2015 and 2016, and out of that 10 year period it experienced shrinkage in 4 of those 10 years. Not stellar but hardly as bad as your described. http://www.imf.org/external/pubs/ft/weo/2017/01/...

I would be curious to find out how many people were swayed to not vote for Clinton because of the second round with the FBI. At that point it didn't make any difference to me but maybe it would have swayed enough people in the areas that counted. I lean towards it not being as important as Hillary ...

Remember though that even Russia isn't denying there was an incident with chemical weapons involved - their claim is that they bombed a rebel chemical weapons factory and that caused the gas to be released. If there were no chemical weapons involved, why would they claim that?

I would bet Republicans could accomplish the same to the Democrats if they dropped the anti-abortion and anti-LGBT crap. I'm not so sure about that, at least not with the anti-abortion part. Thing is, the amount of single-issue anti-gun voters is small - those who want to ban guns or severely restr...
