Re: Teleporters on ships

Stealth In Space- If you can open a portal outside the ship, you can absorb all active sensors and let it pass through the other side.

Re: CAA study shows diverse casting increases box office potential across all budgets

With minority actors, Hollywood has a bit of a thing of going, "It's not minority actors audiences want, it's this actor specifically ." Will Smith becomes a money printing machine? "Nah, we shouldn't take this as a sign to search for other Will Smiths, we just need to put Smith in ev...

Re: CAA study shows diverse casting increases box office potential across all budgets

It probably would have been called a copycat of Captain America if it was Wonder Man. Exactly. "This is just Thor + Captain America, done well but nothing we've seen before." It'd lack the gender commentary or just the context of a woman being told she can't do something... then crossing ...

Re: Teleporters on ships

Lesse, you can use it as a way to distribute materials throughout the ship- sensitive materials (ammo?) could be kept in well protected areas distant from people and you could teleport over only as much as you need, when you need it. If they're reliable enough, you could use some bizarre design choi...

Re: CAA study shows diverse casting increases box office potential across all budgets

I do know that if Wonder Woman had been Wonder Man, it might've still been a good movie, but it probably wouldn't have occurred to me to go. War-era superhero movie with a male lead isn't a gimmie for me, Wonder Woman is. ^ Apparently it effects box office very much, according to this study. Also, T...

CAA study shows diverse casting increases box office potential across all budgets

Creative Artists Agency, a casting agency, performed a study showing diverse casting increases box office potential across all budgets There’s been little debate over the moral arguments behind increasing diversity on- and off-screen in Hollywood, but the economic arguments haven’t always been so c...

Novel series.

Just checked, book 4 came out two days ago. 10 total, so they'll probably complete the run in not that long a time.

Re: Wonder Woman- the Reviews are In

As to the barrier, I definitely caught that ship was capsizing this time. And I noticed that Trevor's plane didn't seem to take any damage in it's escape from the Ottoman base. So I was wondering if the Island's protection included a fuck up technology effect that was causing things to crash/sink. ...

Re: Wonder Woman- the Reviews are In

Article on the Athletes who populated Themyscira It sounds like the Amazons had a lot of fun! No, that's not the Greek depiction of Ares. Sparta (and probably some other cities such as Thebes) seems to have a more positive view of him, but not much of that survives. He's depicted in most sources as...

World War Two- and later wars- will be bloodier thanks to the new weaponry.

Also, while Steve is unlikely to draw out Ares, he may run into someone hyped up on arcano-gas, which could be a serious problem.

Re: Spacedocks take on the versus debate

Other than rapid fire phasers, it strikes me a proximity burst from a photon would do a bad number on fighters too. We've seen photons used in that manner several times.

Re: How does the Disney EU hold up

Also, if the Disney EU has an issue with making things a bit too straightforward ala the biochips, the old EU has problem with going dark and gritty, to the point it gets really wearying. The raw length of the Vong War, the general 'politicans are bad,' arc after arc, the next gen just repeating a f...

Yep, that definitely is targeted.

Once you narrow down the possibilities like that, setting a weapon to proper spread makes sense, but he needed that sensor analysis comparison.

Re: Phasers & photons vs shields & hull.

I think that wasn't to damage the Borg, it was to create massive amounts of interference on their sensors and "blind" them - antimatter signatures which were designed to disguise the shuttle's power systems. A kind of blinding flak, if you will. The Borg's tractor beam started trying to l...

Re: What films of the last decade or so will gain a lasting cult following?

Here's one- The Babadook It's a small Australia horror film, tiny budget and a profitable but also tiny gross, and the monster's oddly been adopted as something of a lgbt icon/meme. The problem with many of today's films is they are already BASED on 'Cult Classics' -- Marvel, DC, Transformers, hell,...

Re: Phasers & photons vs shields & hull.

That's rubbish. Photons you can detonate near the target if you have a rough idea of where the target is . You can point a widebeam phaser discharge there too. If you are shooting completely blind, photon torpedoes are no more useful than phasers are. Sure, but while photons require you to have a r...

Re: What films of the last decade or so will gain a lasting cult following?

The Starship Troopers films have a cult following already, but ST: Invasion and it's sequel Traitor of Mars I think will be remembered for being more true to the source material while at the same time being a continuation of the original 1997 film. EDIT: ST:3 also for it's cheesiness on all levels....

Re: Phasers & photons vs shields & hull.

We saw a hand phaser used in a wide dispersal mode in Voyager - I wonder why they can't just do a wide, low yield sweep of the ship's phasers in all directions, to look for interactions with a vessel? Heck, IIRC, Data used several photon torpedoes set to a low yield, in order to uncover cloaked shi...

Re: Phasers & photons vs shields & hull.

I agree with the "Photons = sledgehammers, Phasers = precision" idea, or at least the capacity to chose precision, at full bore phasers can erase a lot of ship. Early in Voyager, the ship was quite sparring with it's photons (no restocking after all), the Kazon's shields could kinda hold o...
