With regards to Tolkien's dislike for allegory, wasn't that more of an issue with people trying to link the books to WWI and WWII, nuclear atom bombs, etc? Tolkien does not say it but the anti-allegory thing is an academic controversy. Allegory was seem by some (Poe for example) as a minor form of ...

My house's Bible, one of them, Catholic, from my grandmother already says that the events in the OT are not accurate but rather symbolic. Wong is right, Epic in literature is not about production but a reference to Events or Individual acts that leave a mark in the formation of important identidy for one culture. It is a style and related to the myths and Troy War is the archetype of Epic story. For example, Moses's story is epic.

I am confused by some afirmations... How realism is the most popular stuff when we had Jorge Luis Borges, Proust, Joyce, Kafka, Oscar Wilde, etc who had nothing to do with Realism ? This is another note, the first post claims that modernism does not work with the notion of fate is totally false. Bor...

Chile also managed to come to independence with relatively little bloodshed, though that was because they had a solid, long-term dicator in power. Brazil was good until the mid-90's, I think. Brazilian independence is quite unique because it was a fake independence. When Pedro I proclaimed the inde...

The bigger peril is to think Elfs, Goblin and orcs are a perfect species. There several creatures that are called elfs and not all of them are described equally. Wait, the elves were gay on purpose? Tolkien was thinking of gays when he portrayed the elves? No, The Elves love to sing (The Entire world was created by a song), are chivalirous, slender, elegant and basead upon the Sidhe of old mythology who had nothing of Gay. Even Galadriel is described as a m...

There is some mistakes in this post. First is to think that convetional fantasy is what Tolkien did. Not what RPG, D&D do. Read the Niebelung (sp?) and you see no Wizard at all. And that is one of the references of Tolkien. The traditional fantasy have not the huge number of mages and magical ef...
