Re: What should be the next fantasy series adapted for tv
I think it was Bernard Cromwell who wrote a three book series about King Arthur that was really good. The Winter King. It's a bit more down to earth and gritty and not so shiny as the traditional poems and later books and movies were. A touch of historical realism, though not touting it as totally ...

Re: Colonies in Space: Mirrors vs Artificial Lighting
I really can't imagine people building such a Bernal Sphere-sized room to build factories, suburban houses, apartment blocks, and office towers full of cubicles in it, although those might line the walls or go through canyons in the floor or something, but objections to this apartment-dweller's poi...

Zefram Cochrane saw that in a dream once. That's why he started drinking.darth_timon wrote: ↑2020-03-18 05:40pm Imagine taking the nose of a Defiant-class, sticking it on the end of am Ambassador, and also tucking in the weird Steamrunner nacelles into the Ambassador's saucer...

Not sure about "ugliest", but I never understood why the Ambassador-class design put the warp nacelles so close to the edge of the saucer. It just looks weird.

which was no doubt a reference to the martial arts craze striking the UK in the 70s (The Goodies also did a parody episode of this during that time). Someone else who remembers the ancient Lancastrian mystical martial art of Ecky Thump! :angelic: Here, I'll demonstrate — stand there an' I'll hit yo...

Cheery was a FULL DWARF, who happened to like presenting as a FEMALE. IIRC the traditional gender of a Discworld dwarf is "dwarf". And are they even going to use her full name? It's "Cheery Littlebottom". When he did her job interview, Vimes managed to keep a straight face until...

Re: Doctor Who s12e02 spyfall part 2 [SPOILERS]
Better than the first part, I thought. I had a good laugh at the signs in the plane — anyone else remember a very similar gag being used in Harry Harrison's Technicolor ® Time Machine ? Another Ominous Name from Gallifrey's Past in the "Timeless Child"; this sounds familiar, was it one of ...

Hmm... did anyone else think the "phasing-in" effect the aliens used was very reminiscent of the "ghosts" that turned out to be Cybermen in one of the early NuWho episodes? And where did we last see the Master...?

But I am a big tea drinker and I stock up on various tea varieties when I am in Asia. Is there any place where I can experience English teas? Twinnings has a tea shop on the Strand. Can't get more British than that. In the same category — at least, I don't think I've heard of it turning up in Forn ...

Re: What to see in England
When I was in London, I was out in the evening with my Mum and Sis-in-law. After exploring for a bit, we all started getting hungry, and they looked at me to decide what we should eat. My answer? "Well... something traditional?" Mum looks to her daughter and they both exclaim "INDIAN...

Nope, not a total failure. It made space, they learned the computer needs a better GPS, and maybe more fuel in case of oops. Now, assuming the landing is good, they'll just have to tweak a few things. "More fuel" is one of the trickiest problems in space launches; the margins are hair-thi...

At the end of AOTC, hints of the Imperial March play as we see them line up like something out of Riefenstahl. I just re-watched that scene. I've never seen the entire Triumph des Willens , only clips in historical documentaries, so I never realised before; but you're absolutely right. Having Darth...

Bigger chunks are a hazard as well — I remember my geography teacher had a lava bomb on her windowsill that she'd picked up from (I think) Etna. Several inches across, very heavy dark grey rock, flattened into a "flying saucer" shape where it hit the ground while still not quite solidified...

Although I did need a second look at the voting card to notice my polling place is now the new community centre across the road, not the school round ...

Considering the Jedi Order itself tried to keep the abilities of the jedi as at very least semi-mythical to most likely increase the intimidation factor the jedi, it's not such a big leap to assume that Imperial authorities were able to convince people that all jedi abilities were just tricks enhan...

I'm intrigued by the mention of Holland. Considering they'd been overrun and occupied more than a year previously, what part could they have played in any conflict with Japan? I know they had colonies and outposts in the region, but I had no idea this could have been influential enough to lump them ...

Again...?
People up here laughed at the Spitting Image sketch of Thatcher being unable to recognise Scotland on a map until someone reminded her it was "the testing area" because of the amount of percieved truth wrapped around it.
