Re: The trouble I have with parliamentary systems

I would say that the largest problem currently facing American politics is the fact that every politician devotes their time to winning elections rather than governing. The lack of compromise is merely a symptom of this. Would the solution be longer terms then? All democracies are about politicians...

Re: The College Rape Overcorrection

There's no extra criminalizing taking place. Rape is already criminal. This is about attitudes. It's a bit like saying that giving alcohol to kids is already a crime but a lot of people have a less negative view of it. And the message we're sending to them is: beware the risks. If this fucks up the ...

Re: The College Rape Overcorrection

Why not? I assume that the argument is that practically this works just fine. Nothing can be prevented 100% but vigilance and care can reduce the chances of it happening to you until they're negligible. Here's an off the top of my head list of reasons it doesn't work: 1) It can lead to double rape ...

Re: The College Rape Overcorrection

And in this post, stormthebeaches asks a bunch of questions, most of which people in the thread have already answered. Congratulations. Except they really haven't been. None of the anti-drunk sex posters (for lack of a better term) have really tried to define where we should draw the line when it c...

Re: The College Rape Overcorrection

Alyrium talks about both though. Both invalid consent and retroactive consent, which seem different. If you consent to protected sex and I gag you, flip you over and pour hot oil over you mid-coitus without using a condom I suppose one could say that clearly consent wasn't given and I was mistaken (...

Re: The College Rape Overcorrection

Sex with a drunk person = "negligence" now? And what about when both people are equally drunk? Are they both rapists? No. Then it is just fucking sad. Both people are victims. Neither are culpable for a crime because neither had the cognitive capacity to form the necessary intent. Not eve...

Re: FCC commissioner tries to do reddit AMA, fails

Well, I'm honestly prepared to believe she's whoring out her opinions to the highest corporate bidder, exactly as the most cynical people here believe. That her real opinions, the policies of her organization, are an indefensible betrayal of the public trust. And yet I can sympathize a little with ...

Re: Borgia:Triumph and Oblivion

Oh that'they have a new season dont they? I like both series, they each have their strengths. Borgia: N & N (the N changes with each season, you see) is less stylized and more realistic + more historically accurate (though that is not saying a great deal) than the showtime series. On the other ...

Borgia:Triumph and Oblivion

Anyone following this? It's been running parallel to the Jeremy Irons version up until that one was cancelled. It's having its final season on Netflix and, imo, it's a more fun show than The Borgias even if you account for the fact that the Showtime version didn't get to end. On the whole the Borgia...

Re: Class of Swedish students had genital mutilation abroad

How do you have good grounds to suspect someone is attempting to have their child go overseas for FGM? If they have done it before that's good enough for me. If they are known to advocate it, again sounds good. But what if there is no history aside from them coming from parts of the world that tole...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 Discussion (TV Spoilers Only)

True, it doesn't quite match the aforementioned arc but ask Oberyn "Today is not the day I die" Martell about how much you can trust But I thought that was perfectly in keeping with his character arc. He was undone by his well-established arrogance and obsession with Tywin. Just because s...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 Discussion (TV Spoilers Only)

As to the siege tactics of the ones doing the besieging and the besieged, the less said the better. This reaffirms my belief that with a trained force (like a tagmata or a Roman legion) the wall can be held indefinitely. Honestly, doesn't the fact that the millennia-old Wall stand prove your point ...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 discussion (book spoilers inclu

Fuck the Tysha revelation. It was daft, unnecesary and hamfisted in the book and it would've been even worse in the show - having all but book purists scrambling to wonder what the hell Jaime was even talking about and why Tyrion was mad. Tyrion already had ample motivation to kill Tywin. Meh, I ag...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 Discussion (TV Spoilers Only)

Yes and no. Sure, the Wildling army is ridiculously huge, but (as we saw in the last episode) it's undisciplined and very unwieldy. Mance's bit can't have taken more than a couple hundred casualties plus the giants before giving up; they don't have a really solid esprit de corps. They may actually ...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 Discussion (TV Spoilers Only)

One thing to take note of, from the past episode Roose Bolton's description of the size of the North, being as large as the other 7 kingdoms combined - if it weren't already fairly obvious from the opening credits map view. This fact alone means that from a living space standpoint, it could easily ...

Re: Game of Thrones Season 4 Discussion (TV Spoilers Only)

You're free to wish, however in this case, with the lack of discipline on both sides mentioned explicitly throughout the series and the wildlings coming through h...

Re: "Skin Game" Discussion (Dresden Files novel - Spoilers!)

What, Harry's statement about women coming on to him too strong then attempting to eat him alive can't be a real factor here? I don't see how that's relevant to what I said? Harry having hang ups is something else. Harry immediately jumping straight to Lash, to the point where his subconscious know...

Re: "Skin Game" Discussion (Dresden Files novel - Spoilers!)

The Mountain fight scene utterly reinforced my argument that the guy could be beaten by a well-skilled fighter. If only Oberyn had not been so stupid.... Re: "Skin Game" Discussion (Dresden Files novel - Spoilers!)

It is unlikely that Mrs. Butcher didn't start writing until a year or two before being published. A more typical scenario is for someone to write for a decade or more before getting that first novel published. She might well have been writing for years prior to that, long enough that her writing of...
