Re: Poll: Young adults grow uneasier with LGBTQ

Any poll which doesn't state what its sampling frame and final population were is not worth paying any attention to whatsoever. You can prove anything you like with the right survey design, and so until I know what design was used I consider nothing to have been proved. Immediate edit: Exact questio...

Re: TLJ throne room fight scene

1. Its relevant insofar as this is a discussion about the strengths and weaknesses of a specific scene in the Sequel Trilogy, and it absolutely is something that would have come up if the scene were shot in the way the OP suggests. And political subtext or implications is as much a valid subject of...

Re: What do you want the force, and the Jedi to mean?

Well, let's face it, the big problem of the ST, a bit like the PT, is execution. We're not getting soaked into the world long enough to know what's going on, or why this is going on, so that the fight we're seeing feels a little disconnected. Hopefully they can fix that in IX, but that's going to b...

How about, just for the novelty value, you and everyone else on this board who isn't a mod stop trying to act like my personal hall monitor? You know perfectly well that I'm right about how many people (and absolutely yes that includes some people on this board) would have reacted to Rey using more...

And triggered all the little incels who already think Rey is an overpowered "Mary Sue" (ie woman who's powers threaten their fragile sense of manhood). Oh hell, that's reason enough to do it. I'd give Rey all the powers of Superman just to stick it to those assholes. I would like to see K...

Indeed. In the old EU, wasn't his deal that he knew about the Yuzzhan Vong somehow and thought, correctly, that any hypothetical New Republic was going to botch it so badly that the Empire worked out to be a lesser evil?

Jesus Christ, I thought the old canon was dumb. I mean, it was, but what's the bloody point of wiping the slate clean if you're just going to dive right back into the nonsense pool?

What I think is up is that major warship mount both drive systems. Aircraft are not more maneuverable in any way, shape, or form; reaction drive-driven craft in a vacuum are vastly better than anything plausibly described as 'like aircraft.' The benefit of the phase drive lies 100% in the higher spe...

What I do is wait. Arya has already left to murder Cersei, I have no reason to hurry, no objection to the aforementioned murdering, and no special concern about my enemies' resolve after their leader is dead.

Re: The Canadian Military Pattern Truck, an unsung hero of WWII

The thing to remember is that air strikes don't work in WWI - often it's literally just a guy dropping mortar shells out of a fighter, especially in 1916 - and that heavy artillery can absolutely kill a bunch of people and smash the ground up, but can't permanently deny territory. There simply aren'...

To be fair, there's only so much supply-line-cutting you can reasonably do if you have to get through several hundred thousand very angry Frenchmen to do it, and there are literally no gaps in the line between Switzerland and the Atlantic through which to rush.

Is it... at all possible that y'all are reading too much into this? I know that's what we do here, but are you seriously worried about the IRL-politics implications of the show? Yes. As we should be. Media has always been shaped by, and used to shape, political opinions. People saying "Its jus...

Wanna dial that back a notch? I'm just saying that any number of things might have made this completely fictional universe the way it is for in-universe reasons, even though we all know the real efficient cause is that Paramount executives aren't physicists.

Oh, I don't know. 'It turns out there were hidden problems in this incredibly complex gigantic megastructure that made it not-actually-worth-doing' isn't that illogical. Maybe there's a weird subspace eddy that broke the first test section; maybe there's a non-Newtonian physics principle that only b...

It's plausible that warships cost more than an equivalent volume of space station - maybe high-grade warp drives are like 80% of the cost of a Galaxy-class, I don't know.

Basically, I want an entirely different political structure, and I was overly sarcastic about it. My dream is that there's a meaningful party platform, party members mostly act basically in concert to further it, and we vote on those, not on who got in a better zinger in a formulaic soundbite-genera...

Because when I have an obvious, recent example of a large field doing utterly bizarre things to the primaries, I too like to abdicate all attempts to steer things onto a sane course. You know, like national political organizations are supposed to do.

Oh, wait.

They're actually not that bad, as long as they don't communicate with drinking water supplies. That means lined with something impermeable/downstream/very very far away from where you get your drinking water, ideally all three, and with a boil-water policy in areas where waterborn disease is endemic...

Re: Game Of Thrones: Final Season --SPOILERS!

I gotta say, the literal last episode and a half is an awfully weird time for the show to start applying modern moral standards to its characters, when previously it had been pretty good about using medieval-ish ones. Tyrion's list of Bad Things Daenerys Has Done comes across as a giant case of spec...
