Re: What makes fantasy generic

An aside: Back in the old days when I used to play RPGs with my friends, our stories completely derailed from Dragonlance so far we basically house-ruled our way to a completely new setting we created as we went along. I wrote some short stories set in the "world of Nightsun" and I find th...

Re: What makes fantasy generic

Hey! I'm not dead! :P Anyway... I don't really have a problem, per se, with "generic" anything--I have a problem with bad writing, but the thing is people conflate the two when they're not really the same thing, in fact they're quite different. Funny Games, for example, is not "generi...

Re: Good Military Science Fiction.

Ghetto edit: For example, and maybe it's just this forum but in my experience it's not, I've seen Baen books--which have a loyal fanbase--basically described as little more than reprints of the Turner Diaries. Now, I've read a lot of Baen books, and objectively they're...just not that. But the very ...

Re: Good Military Science Fiction.

Try this. The villains of the Freehold books are SISSY SOCIALIST WHALE-MEN whose government is utterly inept, except for the secret police who suppress religion, politically incorrect sppech, and family values. The villains in Honor Harrington are likewise socialists, who have to conquer the univer...

Re: DirecTV DVR question

Does anyone know about this? I've not been able to find any other information that is conclusive or at least not techno-talk jibberish, and I'm seriously running out of time. Like, less than a day. If anyone knows if the DVR will do playback after the cut off date, I'd be glad to know one way or the...

DirecTV DVR question

I'm trying to record some stuff on my DVR to DVD before I terminate my DirecTV service and I'm wondering if, in the few days between the service cancelling and sending them the DVR back, can I still record off it cause I feel like I need a day or two more and I don't know if it will work. Sorry if t...

Re: Revelation Space vs Mass Effect

I wasn't thinking of any particular timeline or setting per se, it's just a kind of "what if" scenario. But I should have mentioned, I'm not including the Conjoiner's stealth battleships (not sure what else to call them) just the basic weapons and ships everyone had during the war in the Y...

Revelation Space vs Mass Effect

Yo dawg I heard the shitty ending of a sci-fi epic has sparked a discussion about the validity of fan interaction with game publishers, so I put this thread in here to continue stoking the flames of internet battle :P Lol, anyway, I love Revelation Space and I love Mass Effect, so a thought struck m...

Re: Time Has Been Reset

Well, my grandmother will be alive and, fingers crossed, we can catch the cancer in time and kill the shit out of it. Just keep her under constant doctor's observation so when, hell IF, it develops we can kill it before it goes beyond the early stages. So that's a plus right off the bat for me. But ...

Re: In Defense of Duke (or So I Finally Played DNF)

What I'm getting here is that 18 doesn't understand that sexism is more than people explicitly saying "Women are the worst". It, along with any problematic -ism you care to name, tends to be far more systematic in nature. They relate to smaller and far more ingrained things like the casua...

Re: In Defense of Duke (or So I Finally Played DNF)

Much hay has also been made of the alleged sexism or discrimination towards women in the game, but really these sections are little more than somewhat bad black comedy at worst, and overall the idea of "the aliens are raping our women" goes back as far as DN3D. That's kind of the whole po...

Re: Do you have a Sci Fi universe?

Well since you ask... :) I've actually been working on trying to get my series pubished, as of late however I've had little actual success, but I have pie in the sky fantasies plans for a sprawling epic twelve novels long or there abouts, called "Dark Universe". Sit back and grab a beer, t...

Re: Recoil of turbolasers?

Thanks for the information, you guys. I literally have no idea what half of it means but I'm prepared to parse through it with wikipedia open in another tab to try and figure it out, and I'm sure it just means I was right all along so I can shove it down my friend's throat for saying it sounds impos...

Re: My Little Pony

I love how like EVERY episode that Rainbow Dash has a leading role in ends up being a "Break the Haughty" episode. :P Like, me and my girlfriend were discussing this (yes she knows I'm a brony) and she commented how Rainbow is this kind of stereotypical "bitchy popular cheerleader&quo...

In Defense of Duke (or So I Finally Played DNF)

Having been months now since Duke Nukem Forever hit, I realize this is extraordinarily belated but various issues technical and IRL have kept me from hanging around on the internet as much as I once did (incase someone cared why I've been gone for a while...which no one does, sadly), and believe it ...

Re: Tactical Strawmen in MilSF (also 'Clone' series)

Thing is though, it IS possible to do combined arms in sci-fi, I've seen it done from time to time in the 40k novels. A lot of people mainly fall back on dudes in power armor though because a lot of people think that's all there is...ineterestingly, some of the Dale Brown novels (it counts as sci-fi...

Re: Recoil of turbolasers?

Well, the composition of the armor is "hard-cast decasteel", sooo...yeah it's bullshit. It's basically made of "whatever it would need to be to do this"-ium alloy. :v In the story they're a kind of free-electron laser rigged up to fire x-ray lasers, if that makes sense. I'm going...

Re: Recoil of turbolasers?

That wouldn't work too well because a mirror doesn't reflect all the light. Some of it gets absorbed (I think about 5% for a silver mirror), which leads to the mirror being damaged by the heat... which makes it less reflective, which means it absorbs more, and the cycle continues until it's destroy...

Re: Orion's Arm Tipler Oracle

I don't care much for Orion's Arm's pretensions to being "hard sci-fi", but I do think they have a lot of interesting ideas. Isn't it possible to enjoy something despite it being not what the authors say it is? Of course, you're absolutely right. Actually, I'm a "minor fan" of O...

Re: Orion's Arm Tipler Oracle

Ghetto edit: I remember once a thread, must have been years ago like 2007 or whatever, when someone (Sir Nitram, I think?) pointed out that basically anything above like Babylon 5 Earth Alliance is magic for all practical purposes, by any science we understand, and even they have FTL drives. When yo...

Wow, dude, seriously, I don't think anyone really cares about how huge the stick up your ass is. He's right though, I mean for the most part he hit it on the head. "Hard" sci-fi is about an acurate descriptor of something as "wooden steel" and "fiery ice". Anything abo...

Re: My Little Pony

Am i the only one who is not that surprised by it? First of all, the show has so far lacked a teenager-archetype and a goth-archetype, so it's not surprise that we get one. Second of all, Luna IS the younger sister of Celestia - but given Celestias age, that easily puts Luna into the perfect age ca...

Re: Transhumanism in Sci-Fi

Actually, no, it's kind of a myth that the Imperium lost that technology or even "most" of it. In the books, things like significant cybernetic augmentation, genetic engineering and such are all still quite common. The fluff of the games makes it sound less so, but then the fluff of the ga...
