Re: Dead russian sub found in swedish waters
*Shrug* It was built in 1901, long before age of all welded ships. If a riveted part was hit in collision, even weak strike would have buckled the plate and torn it open. Name comparison on old photo and wreck seems to check out. Some older photos still as Fulton : http://www.navsource.org/archives/...

Re: Dead russian sub found in swedish waters
After reading discussion on it on Russian forum - people claim to have cleaned video and deciphered the name of the ship reading " СОМЪ " (Sum'). Pretty much confirming Swedish military opinion. It is also confirmed by the fact it was lost on patrol near Swedish waters, close to what then ...

Re: Dead russian sub found in swedish waters
Remember last time someone in Sweden "found" Russian "submarine"? Well, turns out the find is most likely as 'real' as last time. Though, this time it's at least something that could submerge. According to experts, it's Imperial Russian Navy's submersible boat Sum (Catfish) , san...

I'm beginning to think that way as well. Wasn't he the cause of a pretty spectacular crunch — right in the middle of the pit straight — that totally changed the last few laps of a race, in one of the night races a few years back? Can't remember exactly where or when. That's the problem - people fix...

Re: Trump Is the Poison His Party Concocted
For all of Iran-Contra and the crapshoots that happen during any given presidency, Reagan did have a legitimate presidency. I am sorry, I don't consider poisoning the whole planet by 'greed is good, deregulate' mentality as shining success. Then, you have him (as you pointed out) illegally support ...

Re: Trump Is the Poison His Party Concocted
I like the weasel lumping of Reagan and Eisenhower. How is Trump different from Reagan, exactly? He is the product of 80s, and if there is anything different in GOP now, it's the fact in 80s Reagan still has sad remnants of Eisenhower era politicians in party to hold some of the insanity back.

Well, there was this:

Sort of combines science (linguistics) with in universe story. It's kind of short, though.

Re: Kepler finds Earth-sized planet in habitable zone 500ly
I really wish someone would do estimates of whether our instruments are good enough to arrive at negative conclusions. For instance, "yes, we are pretty sure Alpha Centauri doesn't have any planets larger than X or closer to the star(s) than Y." Because as it stands we keep spotting exopl...

To me (I have limited knowledge of HGttG), both the Tardis and the Heart of Gold travel instantly, but I'd give the Tardis the edge for bring able to travel just about anywhere in time and space. Can the HoG do that? Time and space? To quote HGG - the drive " passes through every conceivable p...

Re: Denmark’s wind farms generated 140% power needs on July
You can say that, but there will not be a new power plant in Germany for the foreseeable future and I do not trust the old designs (you know, the ones who were proven to be unable to withstand an earthquake, or otherwise the plant built alongside a fault line would not have been shut down). You mea...

Re: Russian billionaire grants 100 mln $ to SETI search
I say that while being highly skeptical that SETI will actually find anything. Why so pessimistic? SETI already discovered a lot of things about natural radio signals coming here, such as pulsars. Even if we don't find any alien signal, finding out more about anomalies and hypothesized objects like...

Re: Cameron crackdown on tax havens 'purely political gestur
As for tax havens, this complaint is highly disingenuous and hypocritical. The UK has stated clearly that it would like to solve the problem, but the dependencies are separate countries with their own common law legal systems and elected legislature for domestic policy. If the UK government were to...

I don't know the details of that. But at least Lucas has a claim to being the one who gets final say over Star wars by virtue of having created it. No. He really did not. It was a team effort. New Hope was cut by Marcia Lucas (who won Academy Award for her job on that), Kurtz curbed a lot of dumb a...

3. Let's say someone went back in time and killed Hitler as a little kid - maybe WWII never happens, but as a result, we don't get the technological boom that resulted from the war. How many years "behind" would we then be? Heck, how many people were prevented from having offspring, or we...
