Re: What's the hardest part of your writing process?
Resisting the urge to do infodumps. I find it difficult to avoid writting too much about the setting and it's tech rather than the character and story. I find it useful to write all that stuff up in encyclopedia-style format. That way it's available if I need it, and it gets the information out of ...

Your concerns are noted. I am redoing chapter three. Wasn't very happy with it anyway.

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover Ch. 3
Er, hard to aim as in "hard to hit a target 50 km away precisely enough?" or hard to aim as in "hard to draw a bead?" It is "hard to aim" battleship-caliber artillery at an attacking fighter-bomber; this does not mean that the fighter-bomber is too far away to be hit b...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover Ch. 3
Don't be too sure- ME ships are stated as not using laser weapons at close ranges because it's hard to aim them. Close range, in this case, is about fifty kilometers, which they refer to as "Knife-fighting range." Considering that now, on our world, in the year 2011, we can reflect a laser...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover Ch. 3
I was using BOLO! too- I'm just forgetful. And it's not all Mark XXXIII's that have to shut down their sheilds to use counter-grav, it's just that that one had no reaction mass at all. It was running on solar and batteries, not the usual fusion. Really? Wait, i have a story in "The Best of the...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover Ch. 3
That was very cool. Only one small comment: The Bolo the Golem resumed fire at a furious pace, but even battlescreens and the finest durachrome alloy can only take so much punishment. An instant after their last payload was released, they were holed through utterly. This is a bit vague. Are you say...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover
Here's Chapter Three. Oh, and Mr. Doom? Remember when I said that A Bolo wasn't the one who said "Battle Reflex Mode Activated?" This was technically true. More accurately, it was three Mk. XXVI Bolos and a military AI mounted on the Centerpoint Station. Chapter 3: The Battle of ...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover
So far I like this story, but like Mass Effect I don't like how it is heavily reliant on the codex for back story. It would definitely be interesting to see mass Mass Effect ground forces attacking a bolo :D (Yes, I did that on purpose) Yay, two pages! But I sort of disagree. The codexes imply that...

Plus, the whole, you know, the whole "Radiation," and "Cancers," thing. Maybe it's just me, but being in any proximity to a nuclear device is an experience I'd rather avoid.
But you guys know me; I'm weird like that.

Re: EPIC FAIL Master Races
Agreed, the Etherdrive could be useful over short distances, particularly when boosted by a Navigator. Plus, since it has far less connection to the Warp, or as some call it, "Super Space Hell," it'd be far less likely to attract the attentions of, say, demons, hellmonsters, the Chaos God...

Re: Really big upper-atmosphere detonations
This, amongst many other reasons, is why an Orion Drive is considered a Really, REALLY bad idea. For those who don't know what an Orion Drive is, it's basically the idea that the propulsion of your ship is maintained by dropping nukes behind your ship and riding the blast wave. While awesome... you ...

[...] Oh, and if you want a Sci-Fi series that uses an Orion Drive, check out the Troy Rising series, by John Ringo. [...] Having recently finished the trilogy, I'd strongly support Sithking Zero's suggestion, with a caveat: book 3, "The Hot Gates", most definitely does not exist. Books 1...

Re: New Story: Alternate Antilles
You've actually made Vader's death here seem credible, and whilst this might seem an initial victory for the Rebellion, things are about to get a lot harder for them unless Palpatine discovers Luke's potential and tries lots of complicated schemes to catch him. Without Vader's desire to take Skywal...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover
It's actually not as big a problem in military SF as it is in crossovers , especially crossovers done in the very hardware-centric, analysis-heavy style that comes with the territory here. In crossovers, specifically, it is quite challenging to make it about the men and not the toys. But the toys a...

Re: Concordiat Ascendant: A Bolo/Mass Effect Crossover
Looks good so far. I wonder, do the starships have AI minds as well? That would be a large factor in dealing with both the Quarians and the Geth. They do, although the AIs are a little lower-grade than Bolo AIs. This is an interesting start to the story, and frankly, introducing Bolos into anything...
