Therians. AT-43. Transcended above the mortal coil...also use white dwarf stars to power their small craft, which are still giganormous planets full of nanotech that they use to modify their surroundings so they don't get bored...also live their entire lives via forums...

Oath of Swords by David Weber, along with it's 2 sequels. The main characters actually distrust gods to start with and then actually encounter two of them. The main character swears an oath to a god and that same god actually explains the absence of divine intervention in most cases.
