Re: Washingtonians: Anyone going to the "Reason Rally" March
I'm thinking about going. It's certainly got a good lineup, and I miss being active in the atheist movement.

Re: Vietnam old guys are misogynist
I'm kind of shocked that people didn't pick up on the sexism. It's pretty blatant. I don't know if I'd call it misogyny, but it's definitely fucking sexist to say the performance is a celebration of the "beauty and refined talent" of women entrepreneurs. Have Vietnamese women's groups resp...

Re: Obama Offers "Accomodation" On Birth Control Rule
Do you notice the word "either" there? That's because the other half of that sentence was talking about things like birth control pills. Widespread, predictable, stable expenses are poor targets for insurance because the whole point of insurance is to take isolated, unpredictable, unstabl...

Sure, only "getting on with business" would happen more efficiently without a time-wasting prayer at the beginning of the meeting.

Re: Ron Paul approved newsletters personally, and BONUS!
Uh, it's not some kind of underground liberal-blogs-only story. There was a CNN interview where he was asked about it, and the Republican debate in New Hampshire featured a question about it, too. A quick google for "ron paul racist newsletter" found results from the Washington Post, CBS N...

Re: US Marines Pose With SS Flag In Afghanistan
I would not have known what that meant before high school. I assume that at least one of those guys passed high school history. Have you seen what people think about history? The SS symbol is much more obscure (to Americans, anyway) than the questions on those "Americans don't know shit ...

Re: Ron Paul approved newsletters personally, and BONUS!
I think charisma and likability count for anyone, especially if the candidate is telling people what they already think. Obama certainly benefited from that in '08. For Paul, he's mostly popular with young white men from upper-middle-class families, who stand to benefit the most and suffer the least...

Re: One town's war on gay teens
Tammy's suffering hasn't ended. In mid-December, her nine-year-old son was hospitalized for suicidal tendencies; he'd tried to drown himself in the bathtub, wanting to see his big brother again. This seems to provide a horrible real-world example of what can go wrong when you raise children to beli...

Magis, I have to say I don't understand your insistence that there's a degree program and then there's your licensing requirements, and only licensed professionals have to follow the ethics code, and never the twain shall meet. Aside from the fact that this is precisely how several professional tra...

Re: Colorado & Minnesota Caucus
Does Christie have any sort of shady baggage from New Jersey? It would certainly explain why he explicitly ruled out running this time. Oh, if wishing made it so... but no, I don't think so. For a Republican in a blue state, he's fairly popular. Last poll I can find puts his NJ approval rating in t...

Re: Counseling student refuses gay clients, gets expelled, s
Different professional programs and organizations do things differently from engineering. True in general, but in this case not, at least not up in Canada. I know at my university it explicitly says as part of the general rules of the organization that "all students in a profession program suc...

Re: Counseling student refuses gay clients, gets expelled, s
My biggest question is whether this was a first offense for her. If this was the first gay client she encountered and refused, immediate expulsion seems a bit extreme, since it gives her little to no warning that what she's doing is not considered acceptable. But it seems a lot less extreme if this...

How hard have you looked? For that matter, how many minority spokesmen even care about Ron Paul, seeing as how he's just one Republican candidate out of a field of several, and Republicans have a nasty habit of ignoring or screwing over minorities to cater to rich white interests and poor white pre...

Unfortunately, I made that argument without first consulting the video, and Paul's explanation for his reasoning. It wasn't that he would have made an exception based on the merit of her situation, but rather because it could plausibly be denied that fertilization had taken place. The ER doctor giv...

A shot of estrogen ? Does that seriously induce abortion? I'm not a doctor, but I'm pretty sure that's not right. I guess he's continuing in the Bill Frist tradition of Congressional doctors talking out of their asses. I don't believe for a moment that anyone who is actually concerned about the baby...

Re: Counseling student refuses gay clients, gets expelled, s
Well, here's the thing. From the article, it looks like this counsellor tried to get the clients re-assigned to somebody else, and didn't, like, evangelize to them or throw them bodily out of the room. And counsellors refer clients to different people all the time , whether because they don't feel ...

There. Now that the obligatory chest-beating is aside, that's an interesting question, yes. It's not my professional sphere, but I'd guess that a fair number of evangelical types just grin and fake it through the credentialling process and get jobs working at very... 'churchy' institutions (religio...

Re: US Civil War (2011-2015) Sesquicentennial -- Important N
Hope this is relevant: the NYT has a series called Disunion that publishes articles about Civil War events, roughly corresponding to the 150th anniversary of whenever they happened. They're coming out frequently: one every few days. I'm not a historian and can't speak to the scholarship, but the art...

Counseling student refuses gay clients, gets expelled, sues
When Counseling and Conviction Collide In 2009, Julea Ward, a teacher and an evangelical Christian, was studying for a master’s degree in counseling at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti. As part of her training, she was required to treat clients, and she expressed her reluctance to work with...

Re: Tea Party: Teach the good about slavery too
Frankly. time is always a big problem when teaching history. There simply isn't enough time to deeply cover large parts of history. At that point you basically have two choices: quickly skim over large parts of history, or choose a few exemplary parts and cover them well. Now, I'm not sure how exac...

Re: Sexism in Disney & MLP portrayals
Actually, I think that one thing that bothers me more than the portrayal of the princesses is the dearth of female secondary characters. For boys, if they realise that they can't be prince charming, they can still be the wacky sidekick, which is still pretty cool, but for girls, if they're can't re...

What do you mean? A) I wouldn't let a toddler watch Disney Movies. Not under 8 years. B) Seems as if somebody forget to make sure to tell the child that these are fairy tales. I think you're too quick to dismiss this as bad parenting. It's not that simple. A young girl will be familiar with some Di...
